Anime on a 10.1?

After six months waiting, it turns out that the Archos tablet i've been waiting for won't arrive for another four to six months. On the other hand i just saw a Galaxy Tab 10.1 on display the other day.

I just need to ask what videos you guys can play on the 10.1. Anime is a different beast from your regular DVD rips and i've already skipped the Tegra 2 because of the playback issues.

How does the Galaxy Tab 10.1 compare? I've already seen first hand that my officemates Transformer couldn't play the videos i've been playing on a Gen8.

I'm looking for a multimedia tablet, and am looking for one that qualifies as an alternative to the yet to arrive Gen9 1.5s. Which of these works on your tablets without stuttering? Either with the stock player of third party.

Claiming to be able to play 1080p is irrelevant if i have to leave the PC overnight converting.

Dice player plays 1080p supposedly. I know for sure that 730p plays perfectly fine. Why do you need 18080p for Anime on a 10" screen I do not understand.

Couldn't care less about 1080p output actually (1080p is for a 22"+ monitor not a tiny 10"). The issue is compatibility, in that i have around 2,010 anime video files in my to-watch folder (that's not including the other 8 terabytes in my archives) with a couple hundred more in my unsorted folder, and there's no way in going to convert all that just for a tablet.

I've had two iPod Touches (3rd & 4th gen) and even tho they've been advertised as capable of 720p, the truth is that it only 'technically' supports them, stock player ignores mkvs, 3rd party player are unwatcheable. I had to leave my PC running overnight re-encoding so i'll have something to put on it the next day. The Archos was the first tablet where i only had to drag the files to it while i'm eating breakfast. No preparation needed. Almost everything up to 720p worked.

An officemate got an asus transformer and i handed hin the sd card from my archos gen8 and he tried playing the videos in it. Most didn't work, some were unwatchable. I did some research after that and decided to skip the Tegra2.

I've been waiting for the Archos Gen9 for six months now, and just learned that it'll probably be another 6 months before i get my hands on one. So now i'm looking for an alternative.

Just because it says it supports 1080p on the box, doesn't mean it'll actually play the 1080p files in your library. I just need confirmation that the tablet is compatible with my media library.

You still have not said what kind of files those Animes are and what resolution.

Transformer might not have had any 3rd party media players - they are usually mich better than the built-in ones.

Specify what files you have and people will tell you if they can be played or not.

Thanks. Here's one of the videos that was in the link i posted.

Download Lia_-_Tori_no_Uta_long_version.mkv for free on Filesonic.com

I sent that to a guy with a Gen9 A80 and he was able to play it. I'm looking for an alternative tablet that can do the same.

The samsung galaxy 10.1 is $650.00, i'll set my budget to $700.00 for a tablet that can do it. It's also going to be used for research while i'm learning honeycomb programming and flash development so i can spend a bit more since it's also for work.

I cannot download anything ATM so you will have to tell me what format and resolution the file is.

1920x1080 29.97fps 4.1 high profile 8refs

I was impressed considering that it took a years worth of driver updates before it finally ran on my ATI5850HD. High profile 1080p is bad enough, but it still managing to play even with 8 reference frames is impressive.

I doubt the Tab is going to play high profile 1080p, why would anyone want to watch 1080p on a small screen like the Tab, I have no idea.

Like i said, i'm after compatibility. Which one do you prefer to play on your desktop? 720p? or 1080p? I'm betting on the latter. That means NONE of your videos will be able to run on the tablet unless it supports that too, or you spend overnight downsampling them with a video encoder.

Whenever i can, i get the higher quality versions of a video, i don't have the bandwidth to download variations of a video multiple times. I have a two terabyte drive specially for storing my to-watch folder and it's getting full. I don't have the time, the CPU, or the space to re-encode all that.

Thanks for the input. I'll be looking for someone with an iconia W500 next. But the battery life and weight on that leaves much to be desired.

On my desktop I use either 720 or 1080p. On my laptop I do not care much as the screen is not big enough to see a huge difference. On my tablet it does not matter.

You need to decide if you watch them on your desktop or on your tablet. What is supposed to be watched on your tablet dl it in 720p or lower, a waste of bandwidth to dl something in 1080p if you only intend to watch it on a 10" screen.

You are trying to treat your tablet like a desktop machine - it will never be one. Be prepared to compromise on some stuff compared to your desktop or you will be very disappointed. I sort my stuff by destination device to be played on and my tablet is perfect for what I watch on it.

Do not dl variations - why would oyu do that? dl normal quality and you will be fine, these are just animes, not action movies with 5.1 sound and all. I think you got to the point where you think everything needs to be in HD format - there is not reason to think like that. There is no point in watching everything in HD.

Thing is, i don't want to have to plan my videos around a tablet (That's the apple way of thinking. I did that with the iPod, it sucked the fun out of watching videos). One copy, stored in my media server, that can be watched from any of our two PC's and three laptops.

The lowest end Archos Gen9 does. That video sample i posted was running on it. Like i said, i do not want to have to download, store, or convert different variations of the same video. I'm looking for a 10" tablet other than the Archos that can play them as well.

PS: I'm putting emphasis on Anime, but truthfully, all my non-anime 1080p MKV's are encoded on high profile as well.

From what you're saying, it seems the only other choice is to wait for kal-el.

You are not looking for a tablet but another PC. Forget about a tablet and get a laptop. You are not going to get everything you get from a desktop on a tablet.

I've already got my eye on one. However it's $1,300.00+ and the battery's only good for 3 hours. I just want a media player that's compatible with my media collection and if possible, access them directly from the file server.

The archos was the only one that checks the tickboxes on the requirements for a good media player. And they can do it since last year, despite shoddy build quality and constant delays, but they've got more functionality than other tablets, i was hoping there would be other tablets that could do it by now.

We're getting off topic tho, this is the Galaxy Tab thread, and it's clearly not the device i'm looking for. I've looked at specs and it's a Tegra2, i previously had the impression it was an OMAP (That should have answered my original question). Its performance would be no different from a Transformer i've already turned down, but almost $200.00 more expensive.

i think 720 for anime is enough....
hey.. I wanna ask something..
Why my 10,1 doesn't read .mkv..
Not much.. If the file too big it wont open...
