Help Annoyances/gripes with the Esteem

MetroPOS

Android Enthusiast
Got an Esteem today after playing with my cousin's, and overall I think I made a smart move upgrading from the Indulge. With the money I got for my Indulge and the rebate, I've basically paid $150 for an Esteem, which is a fair upgrade fee from the Indulge in my opinion.

Display, camera, interface, and navigating through the phone is much better on the Esteem. More features too. Also I had a bunch of games that wouldn't work on the Indulge...so far the Esteem hasn't had a problem loading or running any of them. And it even has its own built in call block feature (there's a setting that lets you have incoming calls for certain contacts go directly to voicemail if you want).

I always thought the slideout keyboard on the Indulge was useless so I don't feel like I'm missing anything in that department, plus the onscreen keyboard is so much larger on the Esteem that texting and typing on this phone is significantly easier. I'd also be lying if I said I miss having the MetroPCS logo on the top of my phone.

But anyway...I do think this phone is much better than the Indulge, however, since the only threads I've been seeing people post on this forum so far are nothing but praise and compliments, I'm going to play devil's advocate. Here are several annoyances/drawbacks I have noticed with the Esteem (this is coming from someone who used an Indulge for the past 7 months):

-I'm confused about why exactly the Esteem needed to be so bulky. If it weren't for the slideout keyboard on the Indulge, that phone would have been much thinner. What's the extra space being used for with the Esteem? Chip space for the HDMI converter?

-I have not noticed significantly improved 4G/LTE reception with this phone (running into the same trouble spots that I had with the Indulge), but it seems like the battery use is slightly better than it is with the Indulge. However, charging up the battery seems to take much longer on the Esteem. I don't know how to turn 4G off on this phone yet (Any Cut didn't find a good LTE menu like it did with the Indulge), but I still remember being able to charge the Indulge while 4G was on faster than this phone charges with 4G on.

-No camera button. Definitely miss that from the Indulge even though I don't use cameras very often...was still nice to be able to just tap the side of the phone and go straight to camera instead of having to press on an icon. Seems like there was more than enough space somewhere for a camera button on the left side of the phone above the usb/charger port too.

-Boot up time has gone up considerably after putting in my 16gb external sd card. It's just as bad as the boot up on my Indulge was. Hopefully I don't have to turn the phone off too often. And speaking of sdcards, the whole 4gb internal sdcard concept is awkward to me. When I go to Settings-->Applications-->Storage Use, it only shows SD card storage on the internal card. I hope this doesn't mean you can't move apps onto your larger external card. If this is the case, that means my external card will only serve as storage for media and apps that aren't installed, and that we're limited to a maximum of 4gb worth of apps. Hopefully I'm wrong about this

-The Indulge allowed you to adjust the brightness on your phone simply by swiping your finger along the top status bar to the left or right but that doesn't work with the Esteem. You could also enable GPS from the drop down menu...but that setting is missing from the Esteem's drop down. The only quick remedy I have found for these two things on the Esteem is to use the power control widget...which has both settings there. EDIT: Was wrong about the GPS button not being on the drop down menu. Don't know why I didn't notice it

-Would like to disable the zoom out/zoom in button that always appears on the bottom right of the browser. What's the point of having that crap on every webpage when your phone has pinch zoom? And no, I don't want another browser app.

-The calendar on the Esteem doesn't seem to let you set reminders on the calendar events to go off at the exact time of the event. Can only be set to minutes/hours before the event. On the Indulge, for the 'reminder' setting, you could select 'on time' so that if wanted to be alerted about something at the exact time, for example, 10:30, you could set it to alert you at exactly 10:30 by choosing the 'on time' setting. On the Esteem it only allows you to choose 1 minute before..2 minutes before..etc. Also the Indulge actually allowed you to customize an exact time with x amount of minutes or x amount of hours, if you wanted to, which is something not present here I believe. This isn't that big of a deal...just a minor inconvenience.

-Was a pain in the ass getting the Esteem to let me select custom sound clips/ringtones for alarms, notifications, and ringtones. Had to navigate to the _ExternalSD folder (my external sd card) and inside of the media/audio directory I had to create three folders (alarms, notifications, ringtones) and dump the sound files into all 3 folders in order to get them to be selectable on all 3 menu. I don't remember it being this difficult to be able to select your custom tones on the Indulge. Wasn't that the point of media scanner?

-The calculator app on the Esteem is lousy. No way to display your history or anything. Wonder if I can get the calculator from the Indulge on here somehow cause I kind of miss that. And I need to get Write & Go on this phone (from the Indulge too)

-If you use the Email app and put it on your homescreen, it doesn't look like the icon changes to show you the number of new message you have like it did on the Indulge. Meh.

-Just like the Indulge, when the screen goes off, you can only get it back on by hitting the standby button. And no AMOLED display either!! (LOL j/k I really don't care about this...when the phone is on full brightness the display is nice looking).

Alright that's enough bad mouthing for now.

Things just got alittle chilly in here.....(@_@)....hey i had the indulge so i know whatya mean but you gotta give em alittle credit....metro is low on the food chain....i blame them...not the makers....but like everyone else here...i sold out...i love my esteem...hahahahahahahhahahahaahahahahhahahahaaa....jk but yea

You could also enable GPS from the drop down menu...but that setting is missing from the Esteem's drop down

im so confused here as i can swear mines has the dropdown menu and you can just hit the gps satelite..i REALLY agree with you on the calculater i hate the esteem's calculater...it's too simple..

Just create a folder called "Ringtones", without the quotes, on the SD card and drop whatever you want in it. The phone picks it up under Ringtones.

You seem to forget that the Indulge is made by Samsung. The Esteem is made by LG.

You're right. I don't know why I didn't notice it. Must have been tired.

I didn't forget that actually. But I kind of see your point. In the past before there was Android, all the manufacturers' cell phones were completely different from each other in every way and it was normal for one phone's ui to be nothing like the other phones. I guess that now that all the phones use Android, I guess I have expectations of the phones to be almost clones of each other and that everything an older droid phone had would be on the newer one...but that obviously won't be the case between two different manufacturers. Still...even with this list of complaints, I would not go back to the Indulge.

I am pretty sure I already had that on the external card, but I guess I will try that out and see if it works so that I don't have to have 3 copies of every sound clip.

You might need to restart Fter creating the folder. Thats what i had to do for my optimus to pick up my alarms folder

Hi everyone. I am new to this side of the forum for I use to dwell in the Huawei Ascend forum. I went from a noob to a ROM changer in no time thanks to this forum and some dedicated people who showed me how to turn a low end phone into a much better one. Anyway I now have the LG Esteem and I am blown away with this one. I havent had it long but love what I see so far. Im not highly tech savy but am learning a lot from this site and looking forward to coming back often. Only question I have; is there a way to watch music video on youtube then download to phone?

The Samsung Indulge does NOT have an AMOLED display. So you should remove that reference from your comparisons.

Unless you say, "Samung didn't put an AMOELD display on the Indulge, so it's no big deal there's not one on the LG Esteem." ;)

Resolution

Indulge
320 x 480 pixels

Esteem
480 x 800 pixels

I like how you decided to comment on the only complaint I made that was a joke, and completely ignored all my serious ones.

Just doing you a favor to correct you. You SAY it was a joke, but if so you were not clear at all. You were comparing the Indulge to the Esteem, then say "no AMOLED display either!" I think you thought the Indulge actually had an AMOLED screen. Otherwise why mention it?

The Samsung Craft (sold by MetroPCS) has an AMOLED screen and other Samsung "Galaxy" Androids have AMOLED screenn. But the Samsung Galaxy Indulge does not.

-Just like the Indulge, when the screen goes off, you can only get it back on by hitting the standby button. And no AMOLED display either!! (LOL j/k I really don't care about this...when the phone is on full brightness the display is nice looking).

By mentioning that IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH as the Indulge, it seemed you were saying while the Indulge has an AMOLED screen (it doesn't), that the LG Esteem screen is good enough. So, I was correctling or clarifying your remarks.

You are welcome.

=======
p.s. If your other comments Samsung Indulge vs. LG Esteem were accurate comparisons or at least informed opinions, why should I comment on that? I don't own an Indulge so I really have nothing to say about them, except the Esteem specs are as good as or better. Perhaps Samsung has some features on their Androids that are very good? If so, as an owner, your informed opinion is interesting. I've now owned two LG models -- Optimus M and Esteem. And I've played with/rooted some friends' Ascends. I can only compare those models.

Check out the app TubeMate, but it can be hit or miss sometimes.

You were wrong. Making a folder called ringtones does add my custom ringtones/sound clips to the Ringtones menu, but it still is not selectable in the alarms or notifications menu. So yes, if you want all of your custom sounds to come up on all 3 menus, you do need to make the 3 folders I mentioned above.

Just doing you a favor to correct you.

You're not doing me any favors actually. You're satisfying some pathetic anal retentive obsessive compulsive disorder you seem to have.

Actually I read somewhere some devices or OS version, use either:

/sdcard/ringtones
/scdard/notifications

OR I found this works:

/sdcard/media/audio/alarms
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones

Create those folders and it should work. Then again this is coming from Optimus M.

Did I say it created sounds in alarms or notifications? Read what I wrote and not what you imagine I wrote.

what is the internal memory, cause on the website it says 5g, just like when it was launched it said 8g and now it shows 5g so which one is it, can someone let me know cause i see other post saying there is 4g not 5 or 8 so where does Metro get 5g from?

What about the other issues with the phone? Thoughts?

I am by far no expert, please smack me if i make dummass comments...but will give my 3cents anyways :D

-I'm confused about why exactly the Esteem needed to be so bulky. If it weren't for the slideout keyboard on the Indulge, that phone would have been much thinner. What's the extra space being used for with the Esteem? Chip space for the HDMI converter?

Coming from an Ascend, this phone is alot larger, bulkier?, I don't really get that feeling myself. Indulge size is 4.6 x 2.41 x 0.61 and Esteem is 5.03 x 2.63 x 0.53 avg. per metro and a other websites. So Esteem is larger due to screen size and thinner due to no keyboard. It is wider and slightly heavier.....no idea why. The difference could be small differences in hardware such as HDMI port, larger megapixel back camera and a front camera, internal memory differences, preinstalled Iron Man 2 movie, I dunno :)

-I have not noticed significantly improved 4G/LTE reception with this phone (running into the same trouble spots that I had with the Indulge), but it seems like the battery use is slightly better than it is with the Indulge. However, charging up the battery seems to take much longer on the Esteem. 4G reception, Metro PCS, enough said. I personally take what I can get with it for opting to have no contract, ah well.

The battery, not sure but the Esteem is of course from a different company than the Induldge. Brands work differently sometimes.

I as well can not turn off the 4G and have tried many utils but wind up killing the 1xrtt and have to reboot to fix. Im sure when enough of these get in the wild, people will support them in their apps. Any Cut, not familiar with it but like all apps, some do not play well with all types of hardware, check the apps feedback.

I also miss the camera button but its definately not a deal breaker for me. Who knows whats inside and if there really is room to place a dedicated button, maybe Maximum PC can rip em both apart (they do that sometimes) and we can really find out :)

If this is the case, that means my external card will only serve as storage for media and apps that aren't installed, and that we're limited to a maximum of 4gb worth of apps. Hopefully I'm wrong about this

Boot up time I guess is increased as it needs to mount the SD card. With the internal SD card, it is not akward to me since Ascend had this but the Ascend had only approx 178mb available to store apps. There was an external 2gb SD card to store apps and media as well.

Esteem has about 1.5gb of internal phone storage and an additional 4gb of (internal) SD storage. If you are installing apps, 1.5gb is alot and then if the app supports apps2SD then the 4gb should be plenty. The external SD is a great idea of where to store media, since that can take up alot of space.

Induldge? I see on spec sheets 2gb of internal storage but I dunno if thats phone or internal SD.

-The Indulge allowed you to adjust the brightness on your phone simply by swiping your finger along the top status bar to the left or right but that doesn't work with the Esteem. You could also enable GPS from the drop down menu...but that setting is missing from the Esteem's drop down. EDIT: Was wrong about the GPS button not being on the drop down menu. Don't know why I didn't notice it

I suppose that Samsung's TouchWiz interface has this cool feature, LG does not.

-Would like to disable the zoom out/zoom in button that always appears on the bottom right of the browser. What's the point of having that crap on every webpage when your phone has pinch zoom? And no, I don't want another browser app.

The stock Android browser that the Ascend and LG uses does have this feature. It was useful for Ascend and i still find it useful on the Esteem. Maybe the Indudge had a modified browser that did not use that. And sorry if you do not want to check out other browsers. It is one of the cool features of having an Android, having the ability to try out and use 3rd party apps that may give you better functionality than the stock ones.

This isn't that big of a deal...just a minor inconvenience.

No idea about the Calendar since I use a 3rd party to-do list which has a cool widget and reminders similar to the way you are describing the Indudge.

No idea about Media Scanner but it seems that you and others here may have figured this out already and it doesn't seem to awfully difficult.

-The calculator app on the Esteem is lousy. No way to display your history or anything. Wonder if I can get the calculator from the Indulge on here somehow cause I kind of miss that. And I need to get Write & Go on this phone (from the Indulge too)

Stock calc, same for me with the Ascend, maybe the Indudge had a better one. Maybe try finding a cool 3rd party one thats free.

-If you use the Email app and put it on your homescreen, it doesn't look like the icon changes to show you the number of new message you have like it did on the Indulge. Meh.

I have a 3rd party mail app called K-9, and it shows a similar icon in the notification area. Not on the homescreen but does show you. I have no idea about the default mail app.

The phone and messaging icons on the bar at the bottom DO show missed phone call and messages though. My Ascend did not even do that, so must be a Gingerbread feature.

-Just like the Indulge, when the screen goes off, you can only get it back on by hitting the standby button. And no AMOLED display either!! (LOL j/k I really don't care about this...when the phone is on full brightness the display is nice looking).

Not sure what a standby button is, but I am not too thrilled with having to hit power to get the screen back on.

With my Ascend, it was similar but I rooted it and modded it with Cyanogen 6 and ADW homescreen manager and it gave me a feature to make the menu button wake the phone. Maybe that may be an option if you ever decide to root.

So with all of this, I hope to have given you some info although mixed with my ramblings about my experiences. Just remember, its like getting a new PC or Mac and having to adjust to new features, missing or hidden features and embracing a new technologies. I just hope that your new phone will meet your needs by itself, or with alternatives and not be a burden to use throughout the day. :)

Is it just me or does the LG Esteem take 6 hours or more to charge.
I used the wall charger provided and also since its a USB cord I tried to see if it would charge quicker through my computer and XBOX360. Still took an insane amount of time to charge.

I seriously went from about 25% to 100% in about 6 hours.
Call me crazy but, WTF!!!!! The phone life last about 3 hours but takes me more than double to recharge.
-----------------------
Another thing, Ive lost internet connection every day since I bought the phone (4 days). Internet, email, and app store go out, but can still make calls and txt. I have had to restart the phone to get it back. I live in Dallas. Metro is huge here. I dont want to start blaming clouds for bad connection.
------------------------------------------------------------

Seriously man????
Get out of here with that. I think everyone understood that it was a joke. It was pretty obvious to me.
Negative person.

What about the other issues with the phone? Thoughts?

I know it receives a much better signal than my Optimus did. From where I sit at work I would have to aim my Optimus to get anything over a 2 bar 1x signal. My Esteem stays at a solid 3. Where I work I'm right at the edge of a 4G signal.

Is it just me or does the LG Esteem take 6 hours or more to charge.
I used the wall charger provided and also since its a USB cord I tried to see if it would charge quicker through my computer and XBOX360. Still took an insane amount of time to charge.

I had a similar experience the very first time I charged it...but after that first initial charge it seems like it takes about 3 hours or so to charge. It does charge a little faster when you set it to airplane mode (but then you can't receive calls)...or if you turn the phone completely off it charges significantly faster. Also I make sure my brightness is set all the way down to low instead of auto which may help as well.

Another thing, Ive lost internet connection every day since I bought the phone (4 days). Internet, email, and app store go out, but can still make calls and txt. I have had to restart the phone to get it back. I live in Dallas. Metro is huge here. I dont want to start blaming clouds for bad connection.

Weird cause I have not had any problems like that whatsoever. Maybe try updating to a newer PRL (dial *228) and see if that helps

I already posted a thread on how to turn off 4G with Any Cut and force 1x mode, but it doesn't seem to help battery life much, if at all.

There was a significant improvement on the Indulge by disabling 4G, but then again, the Esteem does a much better job at managing battery life with 4G than my Indulge did. You could leave the Indulge on standby for 3 hours with 4G turned on, and you'd lose 20-30% battery without even using the damn phone. Not the case here. I've noticed that with my Esteem...3 hours of standby on 4G it'll only lose about 10 - 15% battery life.

With light usage I don't see how the Esteem can't last you all day if you're using it from a full charge in the morning. But with heavy usage you'll need to get the extended battery. I mean you obviously would get better battery life by forcing 1X mode if you're doing heavy browsing and downloading, but who the hell wants to download at 1X when you're paying for LTE?

I seriously went from about 25% to 100% in about 6 hours.
Call me crazy but, WTF!!!!! The phone life last about 3 hours but takes me more than double to recharge.

Yes and Yes. But after the initial charge it isn't that long. The internet dose cut out for me as well when:
- I wake up in the mornings
- When I disconnect from my wifi
- In a low signal area and only receives x1 connection. Dosen't recover once I'm on 4G known territory

Instead of rebooting the phone enable airplane mode then disable it. I find it resets/re-syncs my data connection.

...
Alright that's enough bad mouthing for now.

I find this laughable.. and please don't take it the wrong way!

I just upgraded from my trusty and loyal Moto Droid 1 with CM7 rom, flashed to MetroPCS(no 3G 1x only) So seeing "Annoyances/gripes" with the Esteem was quite funny to me. I mean it's like buying an Audi after owning a BMW and criticizing it because you miss the features you are used to. It's just my perspective.

I do appreciate your post regardless since all I ever read about the Esteem from people is nothing but praises. :)
