If your using through the gmail app you shouldnt need to, it should be push. That only works though if you have the sync settings turned on in the data sync menu.

the mail app has a setting for different time's i have mine set to every 5mins.

mail>menu>more>settings>send&receive>set download frequency

thats the benefit of gmail. You don't have to poll at intervals.
