Another disappointed Palm user - Why no android/PC sync?!!

glummer

Lurker
MY biggest complaint about my new Android phone, with more power, memory, etc than my old Sony SJ30 is this: the Palm desktop app would let me work on a fullsize desktop/laptop or the PDA, and do any editing, adding, deleting, etc., and then I could sync easily both ways. Nothing in Android seems to work this way. Am I missing something? I consider this THE most useful feature of any hand held device.

Hi glummer, and welcome to AF :)

You can do that for some things. You can manage a Google calendar from a computer (any computer), or use Pimlical on desktop as well as phone if you prefer (yes, CESD has a calendar app for android). A number of ToDo apps have cloud sync, which I assume means you can manage todos from a browser (I keep mine on-device only - not a big user of ToDos), and likewise some note-taking apps (EverNote for example). If you sync contacts with Google I'm sure you can manage your address book via a browser as well.

So it's not all-in-one like Palm Desktop, but there are generally ways of managing key PIM functions from PC, though usually via (a mix of) cloud services rather than siloing with an individual computer.

You can manage your email, contacts and calendar from a web browser on your PC and they are synched to your phone. Most note programs on Android like "Evernote" also have a PC version and they synch automatically as well.

I felt the same way until I found Google website equivalents for the calendar and contacts. After exporting the Palm stuff to CSV and importing to Google, the only thing I missed was the standalone desktop program. But although there are programs designed to fill that hole (or so I hear), I grew accustomed to using my PC browser for that. The Google sites allow me to edit pretty much as well as Palm did, even more in some ways. And syncing between the PC and the Android works even better, no button to push.

One thing on the phone that really irked me is that the Android OS doesn’t present contacts sorted by groups – not sure why they forgot that. You can filter which groups to view, but that requires a lot of tapping. The closest cure I found was Groupy. There’s probably something even better, but satisfied with it, I stopped looking.

I sync pdfs, notes, calendar, contacts, pictures, videos etc, between my PC and phone. You just need the right apps or programs.
