Another Firmware Update UK

Macmagoo

Newbie
Just received another Firmware Update via Kies. I am on a Vodafone Contract but bought my phone from Phones 4U so I don't know if this is just for Vodafone customers or if it is international.

PDA:LG8 / Phone:LG8 / CSC:LG8 (BTU)

LG8 is the latest firmware out. It should bring back the universal search function, which was removed with the LG6 update. There was already a similar thread, though.

My UK Vodafone S3 is still on LF1 :( Does anyone know how to force it to update? Kies just doesn't seem to be updating my phone.

Sorry to hear that, you're actually Vodafone branded I guess. You need to use Odin and flash an unbranded firmware.

does this mean that when samsung releases jelly bean...it wont be actually available on vodafone until they decide to roll it out?

I'm on tmobile and got the update
You can now change the brightness when you pull the notification bar down
Other than that I don't know what it's done

kkudi, yeah, when Samsung releases Jelly Bean, you'll have to wait until Vodafone releases it's own update, unless you unbrand the phone, that is.

3 hasnt had any updates at all yet
oops
just checked on Kies and it says there is a firmware update

PDA:LF6/Phone@LF1/CSC:LF1 (H3G)

any idea what this does?

Not much.

I received a replacement phone from 3 yesterday and it was on this firmware version. It still didn't have any of the major improvements that other networks have received from their updates so I immediately used Odin to flash the LFB unbranded firmware, and I suggest you do the same at least.

The latest firmware is LG8, but I haven't got around to flashing that one yet as I'm waiting for the custom mods I use to be updated to that version, but there's no reason why you shouldn't.

when you flash an unbranded firmware, do you lose all your apps, settings, settings within the app, and data? like msgs, photos, widgets, etc etc?

when I rooted my phone, it was as if I just re-booted. This is not the case when flashing an unbranded firmware right?

also, where can you get the debranded stock firmware? (e.g the firmware you'd get if you were to get the phone from Amazon )

you might wanna edit the links ;-) also does this mean you have to start all over again?:/ in terms of settings, data, apps etc?

Links should work now, sorry about that. I am on Three and got bored with waiting so used these two sites and it worked perfectly and everything was exactly as i left it except now its unbranded and had all the new features.

I'm a bit puzzled. I can see how easy it is to install the unbranded firmware and I really want to do that... but the link says that you need to do a factory reset when in ClockWork Mode.

He did say that it does not wipe your sdcard or your extSDCard...but what I can't be bothered to go through again is the whole process of installing apps, backgrounds, settings, widgets etc...

are you sure you didn't restore with Titanium to have everything the way you did?

No, i think clockwork is for rooted devices.I did'nt do a factory reset I just used the phones backup, settings/backup and reset/make sure back up my data and automatic restore are ticked and the account is the right one. You then have to put the phone into download mode( turn off phone and hold vol down home and power) and follow the odin instructions. I think you also need to make sure the phone is unlocked. If you have never done it before make sure you research and read everything properly.

So my phone is rooted but it's branded with vodafone and I really hate it as it prevents me from getting the latest updates (e.g brightness) and it worries me that when Jelly Bean is out officially, Vodafone will take forever to release it.

The backup option in the settings is ticked.....anyone else have any input on this?

I suppose it does say that it will not wipe my data. So basically I can follow the instructions here [Guide+ROMS]Odin Flash+Root Guide & Stock Firmwares LE4/6/8/9/F/D, LF1/2 - xda-developers (the first bit) and the latest rom from here [Stock Official Firmwares] I9300XXBLG8 (4.0.4) - United Kingdom (BTU) [27-07-12] - xda-developers , specifically this one:

9300XXBLG8 Download (Thanks To SamMobile!)

any idea how I can find out whether the above stock firmware is a wipe version?

Im not sure what you mean by wipe version but those are the exact links i used and it worked perfectly. Hopefully yours will too.

im guessin that although people used to use titanium, the s3 backs up all apps+data for u anyway so its not needed now?

ok thanks for the re-assuring messages! I have done a cwm backup as well and will do a titanium backup just in case. will report back with results after I flash with Odin.

Thanks for all the help :)

I think the backup is android rather than Samsung but it does'nt backup the sd card so might be best to remove it just to be safe.
