Help Another (new) WIFI problem S3

Hi there,

please go easy on me as it's my first post on any such Forum so apologies if i have dumped this in the wrong place......

My S3 has been great until yesterday when it suddenly became unable to connect to any 2.4GHZ wifi network

I tried the power saving fixes via service mode and also a factory restore however to no avail.

as soon as i set my router to transmit at 5GHz the S3 instantly connects, also it doesn't appear to be a crowded channel issue as on 2.4GHZ i was using a channel with few conflicting networks (all at a very low amplitude)

I have multiple other devices as well as my partners S3 which all work fine when the home network is set to 2.4GHZ (leaving my own network at 5GHZ is also not an option as i have some devices not compatible with 5GHZ)

Model GT-I9300
Andriod Version 4.1.1

Baseband Ver
I9300BWDLI1

Kernal ver
3.0.31-256827

Has anyone else experienced such an issue and have any advice?

Please help!

cheers
H

Do you see your 2.4 Ghz SSID? Do you get any error messages when you try to connect? Have you tried changing your authentication password yet?

Welcome to Android Forums Walthamstow17.:)

I hope you'll find AF a little different than other places. We are a friendly lot here. You nailed it on your thread location BTW.

I wish I could help, but it seems other device owners have jumped in to give some ideas. I just wanted to drop by and say hello and welcome.

Hi There,

Thanks for the response I have tried two factory resets and also disabled security on my home network before forgetting the network/turning phone/wifi of an on and then trying to reconnect

My S3 can see the 2.4GHZ networks but just goes from 'connecting' to 'Secured, saved' before then looping back to 'connecting'

As soon as the SSID is changed to transmit at 5GHZ (without changing any other settings) the phone connects fine.

Silly question... but this solves many WiFi issues... Have you power cycled your modem and then router then try to connect?

I have indeed rebooted my Router and also factory reset the router before trying to reconnect using the S3

I have set up two SSID's on my router

1 with WPA auto security

and the other has no security but uses mac filtering to allow a connection from my S3

I cannot connect to either SSID when the router is set to 2.4GHZ

upon switching to 5ghz I can connect to both SSID's!

There is also a BT hotspot visible which is a 2.4GHZ network and I cannot connect to that either but can on all my other WIFI devices

Its driving me INSANE!

I don't know nearly enough about the hardware in these things, but is it possible that the 2.4 Ghz radio in your phone has crapped out? If you've done multiple factory resets & still have the issue, you might want to think of doing an exchange (assume you're still under warranty) & just get yourself a new one...

Yeah, following along with this, that may be what you need to do. Unless I misread something, you said you had another S3 that was connecting fine. That seems to eliminate a lot of points of failure.

The fact that you're seeing the 2.4 SSID says your phone's WiFi is working, to some extent. It would be handy to have someone with a similar phone connect where you're having the issues. Also, I'd go somewhere with an open AP and try to connect. Your phone store might be a good spot to test it out.

It has now decided to start connecting to 2.4ghz networks but only when it is directly balanced on top of the router, I'm off to the 02 shop to get a replacement!

There was a Samsung service centre next to the 02 shop....
they re-flashed device and used some samsung QA tool, turns out WIFI antenna is faulty - being sent back for replacement.

Thanks for you help
