Help Another possible use for USB host support?

I have a TF on the way to me here in Afghaniland as we speak. Been almost 2 weeks since I ordered it! Should get here in the next few days...I hope...

Anyway...there is WiFi here on base for us to use (obviously...) but the bandwidth is very limited, the signal is pretty weak just about anywhere you go and there are about 32136815512 other Marines on it at any given time. As you can imagine, it's VERY slow most of the time and that's if you can connect at all.

My solution?:

Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW 1W 802.11b/g USB Wireless Wifi Network Adapter with 5dBi Antenna and Suction Cup Window Mount Dock - for Wardriving Range Extension

I play for keeps...lol

This thing, in all of its 1 watt glory, is bad ass. I get full service always...doesn't matter where I am.

What I am wondering is this...since the TF, running 3.2 and all, is capable of USB host support, could I run one of these little bad boys on the TF? That would be nothing short of amazing. Clip the thing on my bag, plug it into the TF and I could go where ever I want and get killer reception. I know it will come down to drivers but hey...who knows? Maybe even some awesome dev could make one. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would find this useful.

And...to take it a step further if it does work, wouldn't it be way easier to use this to overcome the hurdles encountered when trying to use an Android device into monitor mode for wep cracking and the like since it's known hardware? Might even look into putting the ARM port of Backtrack 5 on my tablet down the road if this is something that could work. Make my TF a mobile wifi testing MONSTER! lol

That's down the road though...I'd be happy just to be able to use the thing with the TF...especially here.

hehe No drivers are built for the TF as of now for that type of stuff..

Here I have Sniper Hill internet cabled into my laptop and must use "Connectify" to shoot the connection via the laptop's wifi card to the TF. (Sniper hill doesn't allow wifi internet here.)

You COULD use that to port wifi from your awesome adapter/laptop to the TF if you need to. (Connectify is free to download.)

Got my TF today!! Finally!! Feels like it took forever but it really only took 12 days which really isn't that bad.

Ah yes...good ol' Sniper Hill...lol

We have Sniper HIll wifi at the coffee shop here but it's stupid expensive. It's...like...90$ a month. Painful when you get download speeds of 14.4, if that.

We also have wifi in the cans now...and it's free...go figure. This is the internet I'm referring to that has the really weak signal.

I would think that Android would have drivers for things like this since 95% of Android devices have WiFi. The card has a pretty widely used chipset but this is USB...so we'll see...I'm getting the card tonight and I'm going to plug it in and see what happens. Not thinking much will happen though...lol

I'll post my results!

I don't have a laptop. I was using my buddy's for a while but gave it back.

I don't think this will work at all, I think the only luck you'd have would be with some kind of range extender to pick up the free wifi signal and boost it on to you.

For right now, just keyboards and mice are generally guaranteed to work on the USB-

I imagine as Android Tablets keep growing in popularity some manufacturers will realize the 'new market' and start making USB drivers for their products. ie for my external DVD/CD burner-player, joypads, the device you talk about, etc...

Truly Windows and Mac OS will start sliding as the blur between mobile devices and computers gets bigger and bigger...

I got the thing this morning and I'm going to plug it in later on and see what happens. I'll let you know!
