Help Answering machine app?

I've recently got a Sony Xperia M2 and very happy with it, apart from one or two things.

I recently tried the inbuilt answering machine functionality, which seemed a really good idea - catch messages that don't get deleted from provider email after 3 days, record a variety of greetings I can easily switch to depending on the situation (eg I am unavailble all weekend, please email, etc).

However I just tested it now and infuriatingly, despite the machine being on silent, it actually plays my greeting through the phone speaker. So I put the answering machine on because I am in a delicate meeting and don't want to be disturbed, I happen to leave the phone on the table instead of wrapping it in bubblewrap and putting it at the bottom of a drawer, and suddenly by voice starts booming out of the phone because someone has called me - or worse, I leave the phone in my pocket and my voice starts booming out from under the table.... Or worse, I am in the front row of the theatre at a crucial moment in the play, and the silentified phone in my lap suddenly starts blasting out my happy little greeting. I am not sure whether it then starts blasting out the actual message being left, which in my line could be sensitive and confidential information potentially broadcast to an auditorium of people...

I'm not sure if I am just being dumb and missing some obvious setting somewhere, or if this is just a painful oversight in something that could have been quite useful? However I also can't find a setting either to adjust the quality of the messages/greetings, which sound very tinny like voices used to sound over 56k modems... It's such a great little phone I would have expected to be able to at least access a few more settings!

I guess it's useful for weekends, but I'd have to go back to using the regular voicemail at other times, so assuming I can't fix this are there any apps that would be able to do what I want (ie play back a greeting silently except through to the caller, and record their message)? Otherwise I guess I'll just have to switch between voicemail and the answering machine depending on the situation!

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with that phone, so can't comment on the feature functionality. However, give YouMail a try. I think it will do everything you want + it's free, and messages can stay stored indefinitely.
