Answering machine for Android ?

Hi Guys,
I've been chasing this unicorn since my HTC WM6 titan. I've been using XJ MIUI for the Desire that has a built in automatic call recorder in the ROM. It works flawlessly and as been implemented for well over a year now. I have treads on several of the MIUI dev sites to adapt this ability to "on phone voicemail". No Dev's have bitten yet because of the false perception that no-one wants this capability.
A simple Google search can disprove that idea, the requests for such an app are all over the web. As far as I can tell MIUI roms are the easiest route because of the highly customized kernel that already allows applications access to the voice stream. It even has a setting where you can allow or block 3rd party applications access to the stream.
So here's what i'd like to suggest. If your a flasher who likes trying new roms for hoot, then swing over to XDA and try out XJ's MIUI Rom if you have a Desire (ver. X-Part on desire clocked to 1.2 is very impressive). There are others porting MIUI to various devices all over XDA. If you like the Rom post to the tread and ask for this capability to be included. If enough requests are heard then some Dev will look at it and fix it up. Once one starts working on it more always follow. Because of the distro method for MIUI if one gets it working it will spread like wildfire to more devices.
Its worth a try. There will never be a voice mail recorder app in the market. Carriers don't want phones that can record voice mail, its a revenue source tho they say its a legal issue. So Google doesn't want them upset and therefore the code to do this is removed from the source.
It still blows my mind that crap like talking tom cat is on the top of the software lists while real life useful functionality like this idea doesn't exist.

Again, Canadian here.

Or El Googel could get off their asses and start bringing things like voice, and google music to Canada. Hell, whats the hold up? Its a big part of the reason why so many up here are iFans.

I'm using an Android app called Call Recorder Pro, which records all incoming and outgoing calls made on the phone onto its SD-card.
Also, since there is a mediocre auto answer app out there which automatically answers the phone and plays an MP3-file, it really seems like the possibility of creating a good ol' answering machine for Android IS there.
Wouldn't you agree?

jonasjoburg: I checked out the recording app you mentioned, and i see it has almost as many bad reviews as good reviews. That doesn't instill me with much confidence to try it. Most of the newest reviews seem to indicate it is not working.
You don't mention the name of the "mediocre" call auto-answer app, so can't really search for that.
I notice you have exactly one post on these boards. Are you affiliated with the dev of this app in any way?

The call recorder is working OK on my X10 mini but there might of course be other phones it's not working on.
The auto call answer app is called "Auto Call Answer" and reviews are saying that at least some people have gotten it working, indicating that the platform allows automated call answer at least for some phones.
What I'm trying to say here is that I don't see how the Android platform is stopping anyone from attempting to create a classic answering machine app, that is functional for at least a couple of popular phones.
No, I'm not affiliated with anyone I just happened to pick up this thread off Google.

That's great I'd be interested in using it since I don't want to pay a subscription for an on-network answering machine, but rather for an app instead.

So the OP does have voicemail, and it is free to check. But people just don't leave messages there*! So whatever recording device you install, people won't use it!
*probably the main reason voicemail is free overthere: the voicemail service doesn't cost providers there anything either because nobody ever uses it!
It's not about explanations and useless excuses, the fact that we (me too) want to have an old school answering machine on the phone.
I had (have) an old Nokia phone with "AnsMachine" on it.
The best thing ever (and consider that the phone is like 10 years old).
It records all the messages locally in the phone!
You may record different messages for "not in contacts" callers as well as to "private numbers" (which is the most important thing for me).
If you don't want to take the call, the caller can leave you a message (which is on your phone forever, not just for a few weeks on your provider's server).
You can leave a different message to a private caller (bugger) to call from a number or leave a message with his number.
I don't take private calls, 'cos those are 99% bullshit, telemarketing kak.
Unfotunately, there are companies with worngfully installed dashboards have the same private number thingy.
For them is the perfect thing to have a this local answering machine.
If someone left you instructions, the local machine is superior to the voicemail, because you may play it, stop it, rewind it any time, what you can't do with the voicemail.
The bottom line is, there are people finding the local aswering machine, 100 times more convenient and useful, than the viocemail (of course not everybody).
