If you always install apps from Google Play, installing an Antivirus is not a top priority, but if you use other sources to get apps, it is better to have an antivirus installed.
The point being that Android tablets differ from PCs in that (by default) apps only get installed from the app store rather than from e-mails or web sites. Not every app in the app store is perfect, but all mainstream apps will be fine.
Thanks for all your inputs. I finally bought a simpler tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab3 7") since I only use it for basic functions like web searching. I chose to install Avast Mobile AV from the apps site.
