antivirus

As long as you only install apps from trusted sources (basically the Play store) there's no need for antivirus on Android.

But what if I want to do my online banking on my nexus, will I be okay as long as I use only apps from the app store?

A/V doesn't encrypt your data. The app from your bank should do that ... and you should make sure it does before using it, including login credentials.

Personally, I don't use A/V on my Android devices. I only install apps from trusted sources like the Play store, Amazon or getjar and I pay attention to permissions. Besides, I've never heard of an A/V app actually catching malware in the wild (other than the clames by the A/V companies themselves.)

Now, many of the A/V apps have other useful security uses like tracking and remote wipe.

Cool thanks. So how do I know if the site is encrypted on chrome? Will it have a notification of some sort?

If you see the green padlock in the upper left of the address bar, it's a secure site. Tap on it and it will show you the encryption and certificate info. :)

An antivrus app can’t prevent something bad from happening – it can’t see into the future any better than you or me. It can only alert you the instant it happens, although it may already be too late to repair the damage.

Having said that, I have no antivrus apps, get all my apps from the Play Store, also do occasional Android online banking and do sleep at night, very well.
