Any apps for free texting/calling when traveling?

Traveling to Jamaica from the US and looking for options besides paying international fees through Verizon or AT&T...Any suggestions?
 
My wife went to the Dominican a few months back. I had her pay the $40 for internet access as the resort and use Google Hangouts for calls & video chat. Worked like a charm as we were able to talk nightly and she could talk to our son. It's what I plan on doing again when we go to Jamaica in a few months.;)
 
Seconding the Hangouts suggestion. Assuming you've got a Google account, that's probably going to be the easiest all-in-one solution to use.
 
Hangouts/Google Voice and WhatsApp do texting. I'm not sure about Viber (haven't used it before).
