Any good apps for Engineers out there?

A coworker with an iPhone was showing me some of the cool engineering apps that he has. Things like calculators for heat exchanger, belt drives, tank volumes, water/temperature mixing, flow through pipes, friction loss, and some other stuff. The only thing I've come close to finding was an app for tank volumes, but it is very limited in what shapes of tanks it can handle. Maybe my search-fu is just off, but it really doesn't seem like there are any good apps out there for us Android-using engineers. Anyone know of any useful apps they can recommend?

I am an EE so I use things like Droid Tesla, Everycircuit, etc.
Depends...you want civil engineering?
I see a "Civil Calculator," a "Concrete Designs," "Engineering Libraries."

There's always going to be an app for everything. If there is none, you can post it to forums as an 'idea'. someone is bound to pick it up. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Also an EE here ... I broke down and paid for Calculated Industries "Electricalc Pro" calculator. The real plastice and buttons calculator is $100, the Android version is $25 ... and is durn near identical. It's not necessarily an easy calculator to learn, but there is a manual to download. LOTS of functionality!

To the OP ... Calculated Industries has calculators for all trades. Their programs aren't free (or even cheap by comparison), but they are good quality. Construction | Construction Calculators | Calculated Industries

For EEs ... :)

Looking for mainly mechanical or chemical/process engineering apps. Most of the electrical stuff is so far over my head I'll just leave that to the E&I department!

I'm not an engineer (math grad student with a physics background) but i love Andi Calc. It lets me emulate the Ti-86 I've had since high shool. Now if only somebody released an emulator for my beloved broken HP 49g+, that would be great.

I also use the Wolfram alpha app a lot (although I'm slightly bitter if bombed a job interview to work on Wolfram Alpha).

Convertpad is pretty nice too. It's got everything from length conversion to volume, fuel consumption, energy transfer and 100 other things. I'm by no means an engineer, but I do have some CAD experience and am a mechanic so unit converters come in handy.

I'll second "ConvertPad". I like that it displays the same quantity in many different units simultaneously.

I love Droid48 (an HP48GX programmable calculator emulator). Perhaps a little bit of learning curve if you haven't used HP calculators, but well worth it imo. You can develop your own programs for whatever it is you want to do on your phone. My review starts at the third post in this thread:

I have ConvertPad, use it all the time and love it.

Still not finding anything though for things I mentioned in my original post. If I search the Apple App Store, I see cool apps like V-Belt, Heat Exchanger Performance, and Tank Volume Calc that would be great to have. I guess I'll just have to wait and hope we catch up someday.

Anyone know of a good Structural app? I work the structural side of construction (beams, columns, etc) and would like even just a beam size quick reference or something.

Hi, this reply is later but wanted to share with the community anyway.

i have ported two of my most popular iOS apps to android,

[steel shapes], a shapes / sections properties reference tool containing ALL (current, previous & historical) AISC libraries, available here (Google Play link): http://goo.gl/iueEN

&

Steel Beams Bulk Checker, an app for beam design and selection, it process all shapes at once for a given problem so that results can be quickly compared and an optimal pick be made: http://goo.gl/FddeJ

I hope it helps!

For unit conversions, I could not find any app that had the flexibility I wanted and could definitely convert any unit I might come across. One example would be ConvertPad is missing tonnes/year in mass flow, I measure I needed often in my last engineering job.

So I made my own unit converter than uses dimensional analysis and can convert any combination of base units. It's called Flexible Unit Conversion Tool.

If there's still a demand for equipment / piping sizing utilities like heat exchangers, conveyors, tank sizing, pump sizing, etc., I could work on those as future projects...

Yes please!!!

What I would find particularly useful would be a tank (horizontal or vertical) contained volume estimator. Given T-T length, Diameter, head configuration and liquid depth, it would estimate the current contained volume of the vessel.
