Ive been following this post for a few days now, and I just had to post something as well. To start things off, I want to say that one of these teams (SJS & DET) is my all-time favorite organization and has been for YEARS (the other I despise). Which of these of course, i will not say, i am a HOCKEY fan first and foremost. There is no point in talking trash, it only makes it that much harder if your team loses and not much better if they win. Lets see if you can guess what team im rooting for.
First of all, out of the entire NHL, these two teams probably most resemble each other. (same styles of play, same type of coaching, and even close to IDENTICAL regular season records). This is the reason for the following:
-Most consecutive playoff appearances (DET more so of course)
-One Goal Games
-Multiple visits in round two (even against each other)
-Fans hating the opposing teams fans.
-THE LOUDEST 2 HOME VENUES IN THE LEAGUE.
Now for the comparison as it applies to the 2011 Semis:
WINGS - This team is phenomenal and playing an entire 60 minutes. When you look at the game as a whole, the wings are probably one of the most consistant teams during all three periods. Forecheck, skating, shots, hits, faceoffs, PP & PK, the works. They do what they do for the entire game. When it comes to the roster, Detroit has many key players, but not a ton of second or third-had scoring power. They use their stars players effectively, but do not rely on they up-and-comers quite enough. They need to start giving other teammates chances to score as well as let Franzen, Datsyuk, and Zberg chill a little bit (especially now that were at a game 6 and not one of these formentioned players are at 100%). Their defense is also pretty stacked with Lindstrom and Kronwall, but is it enough to stop all tree lines for SJS?? Howard has played the series of his career this year against the sharks. Going into this series I was a little concerned if he was ready to stand up to the sharks offense, but he has proven that he is up to the task. Game 5 was all Howard, and i doubt anyone would beg to differ (except some die-hard datsyuk fans). oh and how could I forget, game 6 is at the JOE.
SHARKS - Even though these teams are incredibly similar, the sharks are maybe a little less consistant (regular season aside). If game 5 didnt make this evident enough, the sharks can make the wings look like they belong in the AHL certain periods, then in others they look like theyre tired and have given up. Theres no denying though, that when the sharks are on it, THEY ARE DEFINITELY ON IT!!! The sharks have the ability to dump the puck into the offensive zone and then get it to the net with ease against detroit. In addition, they are also much better puck-handlers, as detroit feeds off of open ice to make scoring chances. The sharks biggest strength is that they have 3 (arguably 4) lines up front that can get it done. PAVELSKI on the third line? for real?? SJS has got some depth thats for sure. As for defense, Ian White has been a huge trade-deadline acquisition for the sharks and has proven it this postseason. Combine him with Danny Boyle and thats a solid D line (emphasis on "A", thats right, only ONE). As for Niemi, lets just say thank god hes not playing like he did against LA.
Summary:
OFFENSE - SJS > DET
DEFENSE - SJS < DET
GOALTENDING - SJS = DET
HOME ICE - SJS = DET
FACEOFFS - SJS > DET
PP/PK - SJS < DET
Does it get any closer than that? I think not. Game 6/7? is going to be insane!
