Our old Motorola Razr phones always got at least two bars and usually three inside our house. Our new Samsung Captivates are lucky to get one bar. Is there an inexpensive repeater that would work? It's not worth paying hundreds to use our cell phones in our house when we have a land line.

What network? Apparently you can buy a microcell from AT&T for roughly $150. Not exactly the price range I think you were looking for, but it might pay for itself after awhile... With AT&T Femtocell, Your Coverage Troubles Could Be Over | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Are you actually dropping calls or experiencing issues? Bars mean absolutely nothing IMO.
Well I have noticed that my browser stops functioning when I show no bars so there is some relevance at least with 3G although I'm connected to my WiFi network at home.
I do recall not being able to make a call when I showed no bars so they must mean something for calling also.
