Help Anyone else having gmail issues? (and wtf XDA??)

rsarno

Thank Me, Im Irish!
I love how the "this is a development forum, not a community of random users" and "questions will be deleted" is selectively enforced.

I made a great topic, which got great feedback, and it got f*cking deleted??

Anyhow ... is anyone else having random gmail issues? I still have cached version of my thread, so ill post some of them here for anyone else to see:

Having random issues with gmail, all resulting in a brief lock up, followed by a FC

Happens quite often. I'm on ics and it has happened online and offline

Wondering if anyone else has issues or did I effect something up? If so what should I try beyond a reboot?

and some replies:

I'm having weird gmail hanging and force close issues, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it yet.

It's gmail acting up. There are posts about it in just about every section of this forum.

I rebooted and it seems to be fine now

The cause for FC and hang is due to the start of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th CPU. Apps, especially native google apps (calender, browser, gmail) that uses multi-thread. I've contacted the Asus Engineer and were told the issue are being addressed at the moment, and they are testing the new firmware.
With it said though, after I did a factory reset I haven't experience any FC with gmail yet.

I have serious doubts as to whether this is the cause and whether the explanation is even true.

Android has been multithreaded for some time now, the SoC just tells it that it's multithreaded and Android takes it from there -- almost everything, all processes are run on multiple threads so I find it curious why it would only affect specific applications (and perhaps only a specific subset of users?).

It might be an issue with the Tegra 3 internal firmware for handling core frequency stepping, but even then, like I said 1) it should affect more than just gmail, and 2) the stated reason doesn't even make sense.

As I understand it, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cores should always be operating, the Tegras (2 and 3) are running on symmetrical clocks as opposed to the Qualcomm method of running asymmetrical clocks. In other words, all cores are running at the same speed on the Tegra whereas on the Qualcomm multi core Snapdragons, they have the ability to adjust the core frequency independently, and even shut off a core altogether. So... in other words, this explanation as stated makes no sense.

And my final post before someone deleted it without even warning or telling me anything:

This is getting serious for me now.

I just turned it on at work, connected it to wifi. I heard a notification of an email so i hit the notification area, clicked on the email alert .. it opened gmail

i begin visually scanning (not touching) the list of emails in my box. Maybe 7 seconds later, gmail just closes. No warning or alert of FC.

So i hit the recently used apps button, and its there .. but its obvious its not proper, it has an odd look to it. So i hit it anyway

Gmail opens back up, and within a few seconds closes again.

WTF is going on? I rebooted about 1 hour prior to this, and only have the following apps in my "recently used apps" list:

Boat Browser
Settings
NewsRob
Market

Thats it.

WTF now i cant use gmail? is it this bad for others?

So I'm not the only one who see's misguided arrogance over at XDA.

Was reading a topic about wifi issues @ xda and some dude laid into the op about how he was tired of reading all these topics concerning wifi, to which I replied, kindly, that maybe he shouldn't read them then and that I've never witnessed so much hostility, concerning one single product, on any other forum.

He came back later and apologized, says he had a headache, but his was not the first arrogant/hostile post I've witnessed @ XDA !

Try not to post to much over there, might get my hand slapped !

Hey- I've had similar issues with gmail, and with other apps too- I've noticed it especially with EzPDF because each time it does it I wind up with a "conflicted copy" of the doc I was trying to read. I also have google+ crashing frequently, as well as the browser. Sometimes I get the "Sorry, X had to close" message, but other times I just find myself back at the home screen suddenly. I was about to post a question about this exact issue- I've got a few days left to return/exchange my unit at Staples, and I'd really love some opinions as to whether it's likely an ICS and/or firmware-related issue, or if it could be a problem with my particular unit?

I'm also getting the screen flashing periodically (not banding, just flickering), and I get the diagonal triangle flicker with the recent app drawer that I've seen discussed elsewhere too.

Now that an update has been rolled out to the US that has fixed some of the other problems people were having (including screen banding), is it likely that the screen flicker and app closing problems will be fixed with a firmware update one day too?

I'm having the same debate with myself about risking even bigger problems with an exchange that rsarno mentions in the tablet review thread... and I just don't know enough to even guess whether these are hardware or software issues!

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Yea, I too have learned to tread carefully at xda, as someone who's not a developer but still an intermediate/advanced user. Not the most tolerant place. These forums are much friendlier for the most part :-)
