Has anyone else noticed the actual handset speaker (not the speaker on the back, the normal hold to your head to talk bit, whatever its called) steadily gets quieter as the G1 gets older, damn annoying.

It was a hint at your hearing, not the phone. Bit too subtle I guess

I have had my G1 since last year, and I havent noticed any drop in volume in the phone. I have a nasty habbit of hoovering dust out of most of my hardware once a month, laptops, desktops, keyboards, mice, phones etc. Maybe that could help?

Hmm could always be to do with the orange stain on the lil speaker bit....haha oops i must have dropped it in some sauce at some point, my G1 has seen much better days!

Ive had mine since Nov an gotta admit I havent noticed it either...

but I do have the same nasty habit that you have. with the vacuum :o

There isn't really anything electronic in the system that can age or deteriorate to decrease the volume (with one exception that I can think of). The electronics and interconnections would more likely fail or go intermittent (crackle) rather than to slowly decrease in volume. Even if output capacitors were leaky you'd get a phase shift in frequencies -- you'd get tinnier sound, not decrease in volume.

The only thing I can think of that would decrease volume is come kind of gunk coating the speaker diaphragm. Do you live or work in an area of high levels of industrial pollution in the air or other airborne chemicals? High dust or other airborne particulate levels?

If not, it's a much more likely situation that something's happening to your own ears or your perception of sound.
