Anyone have a cordless lawn mower?

I decided to switch to a cordless because every lap around, I had to throw the cord over me. At least for me, this isn't as annoying as the extra weight of a cordless. I'm not a big guy, so I do struggle with the incline and having to maintain the mower when I don't need it which is 8 months of the year for me.
 
My neighbor has a corded mower. I see her pushing it around dragging the long extension cord across the lawn. It seems like an accident waiting to happen to me.
 
For me, it would most certainly be an accident...no waiting needed.
Walmart did not have one in stock so I will go to Home Depot and check it out in person, on my today's 'to do' list. My grass is growing as I am dawdling...

Thanks to you (and targeted advertising) I'm now seeing an ad on the left hand side of this forum for a Black and Decker cordless mower from Amazon. :)
 
Just a bump for an update.

I received my new 36v self-propelled B&D mower last week and have had a chance to use it and this thing rocks! I was able to score this bad boy for only $365 shipped from Amazon which is about $35 less than the non-propelled version at the same time. I had the window open for some time and was finally going to just order it for about $100 more than the non-propelled which it had been when, much to my surprise, it was substantially cheaper than normal. I instantly ordered it and shortly after ordering the price went back up again so I didn't even get a chance to post here about the heads up before it shot back up. It took forever to ship and I was nervous the entire time that my order was going to get canceled. I was excited when it finally shipped but skeptical they were going to send me the right one. When it finally arrived I relieved to see it was indeed the one that retails for over $700 that I got for about half of MSRP. So, if you're in the market keep an eye on Amazon as the deals pop up and then disappear almost as quickly as they came.

So, now to the mower itself. This sucker is heavy. It's probably twice as heavy as my previous 24v mower & the specs prove this at 51lbs & 92lbs comparatively. So the downside is that the powered wheel motors do tend to add some weight. This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it but I can tell you that the ability to pull a lever and have it propel itself is quite handy. I don't use it all the time and find myself using it on inclines mostly. The downside is that when you pull the lever it seems to take a couple seconds to get rolling but after a short period of use I tailored my use to this and would start pushing as I pulled the lever which seemed to help. The 36v made pretty quick work of my yard but, as stated before, the 24v version really wasn't a slouch and always did quite fine. After mowing my yard (approx 3k sq ft) I checked the battery indicator and it still showed 3 of 3 bars so I'm guessing this will meet the specified mow time easily. I'm going to throw it on my trailer to go mow several lawns with it to see how well it does and how it lasts back to back to back. The electric mulch mode is nice because with my older version you have a separate 'plug' you have to use in place of the bag. Being able to flip a switch and be in mulch mode is great. The height indicator is better in this version too. The older version had the ride height adjustment in the rear and the little indicator on the front which was a bit awkward. The new one has a rather large indicator on the back wheel right next to the adjustment. Much more intuitive than the other version and much easier to see what level you are set on. The newer blade starter lever requires a button push prior to pulling the lever which has been weird to adjust to and seems like a needless step but I'm sure some moron cut their toes off and sued. The battery removes quite easily but can be charged on the mower. The charger on the new version is easier to plug in (colored plugs tell you exactly which direction the plug goes) and the little 'key' that goes in place of the charger cord to allow it to start is also much larger and easier to plug in. The larger rear wheels seem to allow for better handling as well.

Overall I'm VERY happy with the deal I got. Looks like it's back up to $450 shipped right now and I was ready to pay that before and now after use I would spend that w/o batting an eyelash. If you have another mower and time though it will likely come down again. I doubt it will ever see $365 shipped again but it has hit $399 once since then. I don't think you will be disappointed with this mower or even the older one I had that this one replaces. Either one is better than using a gas powered mower unless your business is mowing lawns and you mow 15 yards a day but I plan to put that to the test as well...
 
One other quick note to make: The 36v will charge about 50% faster than the 24v battery with similar chemistry and current. Something else to take into consideration.
 
I have had a rechargeable for over a year. My yard is very small but that said, I mow once a week and do not need to recharge more than once or twice all summer. I hate the noise of a gas mower and do not want to store the gas. Downside, you cannot wander off for a month and come back thinking that mower will cut grass a foot tall....
 
What kind of yards are you people mowing that can be mowed with a cordless or corded mower? I'd have to have one heck of an extension cord to mow my yard and I thought I had a small one. New generation gas riding mowers and string trimmers FTW!

No cords at all for me. I charge up my battery whenever I'm not using it and then it just works whenever I need it. Operation is really no different than a gas powered mower save for the fact I'm not inhaling exhaust fumes the whole time and damaging my hearing.
 
going to show my ignorance on the whole issue but as I have a big yard and am getting to old to push mow and have a nice rider do they make a battery only rider? If so what are the going prices (yeah I'm to lazy to google it) nor have I read this whole thread. Kinda glanced it sorta. Anyways all my yard equipment its gas. I've used some battery operated ones and some corded weedeaters that didn't have enough power in them to cut some of the vines we have down here in south Georgia. I've even place one corded one into a patch of weeds and it just stopped spinning. Never had that happen on a gas one I guess it could if I bought a cheap enough one but really how powerfull are these new wave battery and corded machines? can they tackle the tough weeds we have here? Or are they meant for light work?

Not only do they not make a rechargeable rider but you won't see one for a while. Battery technology just isn't there yet. It requires far too much torque to lug a mower the size of a rider around plus the addition of a human... yikes. It would be super heavy, super expensive and take about a month to recharge. If a rider is what you want/need then gas is going to be your only option for the foreseeable future.

Ok I was just thinking since they have electric cars that maybe they have something similar for the rider. Guess I'll be killing atmosphere for a while longer then

At a price though. The battery/generator/motor system in Hybrid cars is heavy, large and expensive. Take the price of a good riding mower and tack another $3,000 onto it and a few hundred pounds. Not really something that would market real well at this point. If Li-Ion or Li-Poly technology gets to where it needs to be then the doors will open for lots of things like this. It's lighter and smaller packages hold more juice. I wouldn't hold your breath though.
 
Well, just ordered the Black and Decker 19" (not self propelled) w/removable battery from Amazon. It is 372.00, down from 399.00...total w/tax for me is 401.00. Cheaper than if I picked it up at Walmart. Can't wait for it to get here, neither can the lawn.

Bought the B&D self propelled version earlier this spring ($420 @ Lowes w/10% off). I ended up with the self propelled only because no one local carries the non propelled and I wanted to buy this local. After 4 uses, I'm happy with my choice. I never had a self propelled mower before nor thought I needed one, kind of glad I did considering this mowers heft. Since I got mine, 2 neighbors have also gone rechargeable. Word to the wise, avoid the Worx pacesetter. My neighbor bought one from HD and has had major issues with the propulsion. It's supposed keep pace with you, but sometimes takes off and often stops unexpectedly. It was funny watching Joe run over his own mower. He's on the 3rd replacement and if this one doesn't work, he's demanding his money back and buying a B&D.

Some things I'd like to change? The power button could be a bit easier to find, maybe raise it? The power connector and "key" could also be simplified so you don't need to pay attention to color or orientation. Obviously, it could be a whole lot lighter!
 
Yay! It got here this morning and finished charging a bit ago. Did a quick run through the yard and like it.
It is heavier than I'd like but not as bad as I thought it would be. There are a few 'tight spots' next to the house/fence, garage/fence...not easy to maneuver in there but nothing would be. I need a weed-whacker for those areas I think.
Over all, after not even a real full mow (some areas are still short) I like it!
