Buy books, and you don't need a Kindle, but that's not the point smacky; the point is that e-ink is far far better for reading long text passages on than any currently available tablet, and the format is far better with regards to battery life.

Oh, and to quote rain-x.com; "Wiper blades should be replaced every six months to a year or as soon as you notice a difference in driving visibility... ...iper blades are necessary... ...Remember to check your wiper blades as part of your regular preventative maintenance program!..."

Seems they're not only needed, but highly recommended by Rain-X's producer themselves. How much more wrong you going to be??

My BMW comes with four years of free maintenance. I'll let the MB drivers worry about that.

I prefer real books.

I bought a Kindle DX almost a year ago and love it. I bought it initially for reading textbooks through my master's degree, but have read about a dozen fiction titles on it as well. One of my favorite pieces of technology.

As for comparing it to nook, nothing else has a 9.3" screen like the DX does, so no comparison. As for the iPad...I can read in direct sunlight (I live on the beach...litterally across the street from it, so that's a plus). For those that don't see the value in paying for a reader and not getting a tablet instead, there are two main reasons. First, obviously, e-ink is much easier on the eyes when reading for long periods of time (such as with textbooks, or on flights). Second, the battery life of my DX will go two full weeks without plugging it in and with reading it about 30 minutes per day. If I read it 2 hours per day, I can go about a week. The best tablet out there couldn't even go 4 hours without dying, hence the point being eReaders are much more travel friendly. I have a laptop and netbook for everything else, I don't want a tablet for just reading.

Have you missed the point of every argument people have given here for e-readers? They have an e-ink screen which isn't backlit, it's much much better for your eyes to read from than an illuminated LCD screen which can cause eye strain.

It'd probably be fine to read a short book, but if you do a lot of reading there's no way I could handle a tablet. Which brings me to another point, when reading a physical book do you sit at a desk with it spread flat out in front of you? No, you probably sit in a chair holding it up. I'd love to do that with a ~2lb tablet for hours on end.
The Kindle is light, the latest one is only 240g, that's lighter than most real books.

There's pretty much no advantage of using a tablet like an iPad over an e-reader for reading books.

I don't walk around saying "wanna see me Kindle."

Having a physical book or a digital book makes no difference in a person's intelligence. They are still reading the same material. That comment is a big fat FAIL.

So would all my Anatomy, Biology and Physical Therapy books impress you? I could care less about impressing people.

You still miss the point after many people have repeated it. Eink is superior to LCD. The $139 for the device is a moot point because it saves you a lot of room not having to store physical books.

Wait, you just said you would rather read a physical book. So which is it?

We get that now after you have repeated it over and over. Why are still here then? I said at the beginning of this thread that I didn't want this to become a Kindle Vs. iPad (tablet) argument. This was meant for people to talk about their Kindle and their experience with it. Thanks for NOT respecting that. Troll.
 
its all personal preference when it comes to e-readers. My wife has a kindle dx. she loves it and it does everything she can ask from an e-reader. But if you ask someone else, they'll say the Kindle sucks and the ipad is better for (yada-yada) reasons.

its all personal preference and people just need to play with each and see what they like the best.
 
The one I ordered for my wife arrived a few days ago. I played with it for a while so when she unwraps it it'll be fully charged and have a few sample books I downloaded for her ready to read. I've been interested in it for a while, but after playing with this one I'm sold; I'll be getting my own very soon. I read quite a lot (Last week I re-read a trilogy of ~400 page paperbacks over the course of 4 days) and for me there are several advantages to the Kindle:

- After a while, holding a book open without cracking the spine is just annoying.
- A Kindle won't flip itself shut forcing you to search for your page when you set it face down because you didn't find a convenient bookmark.
- The Kindle might be slow to change pages compared to an LCD monitor, but it's still faster than most people can turn a physical page without tearing it.
- I work with computers all day, and whether it's the 3.4" display on my Slide or the 23" widescreen LED flat panel display of my PC, it tires out my eyes after a while and I need to take a break. The Kindle's e-ink is no different to read than a physically printed page with the exception that it shouldn't start to yellow after a few years on the shelf. Anyone that equates any LCD display with the e-ink either hasn't seen an e-ink display in person or doesn't do a lot of reading on those displays.
- The way I go through books, any time I take a trip or vacation more than a couple of days long, I'd have to either carry along a few books, or be sure to pick out the biggest one I can find. With the Kindle I have access to a full library in one ultra-slim and ultra-light package.
- Reading in bed at night I use one of those booklights to keep from annoying my wife. Any booklight that's not too bright will either perfectly illuminate one page or the other, but not both. With the single-page layout of a Kindle this isn't an issue.
 
My Kindle just arrived today and I definitely have to agree. The eInk screen is much kinder to the eyes than reading on my phone/laptop.

So yeah, I'm extremely impressed with it so far :)

Yep. I take mine everywhere I go. If I have a spare 20 min, I pull it out and read either a novel, textbook, or my expectant fathers book.

Another great think about the e-ink display is that you can scan barcodes displayed from it. In my line of work, there are 600+ barcode scanners at the various locations that I lead the field IT administration for, and sometimes they need to be reprogrammed for use on a different application. I have all my scanning guides (pdf files) on my kindle DX, so I simply pull up the appropriate one, and scan the programming barcodes one by one. No need to bring printed guides with me anymore.
 
i want to buy one for my mom for christmas this year, but she never really buys books, only borrows them from the library... is there any kind of book renting program you can get with the kindle? she reads wayyy to many books to dish out 9.99 for each one haha
 
None that I know of. Most books are $5.99-$9.99 on Amazon. My wife and I both have Kindles and read a lot. Reading can be expensive.

The nice thing is that you can have multiple Kindles on the same account so you can share books between them.
 
ahhh man that sucks, i dont know if i should get it for her now haha... they should do something like netflix, but with books, that would awesome

Not quite sure how that would work... but it would be nice.
 
Can you use a droid 1 with wireless tether to get online with the Kindle?
My WiFi kindle should be here next friday or so
