anyone in tree removal?

I have this large tree in my front yard, its gotta be at least 40 feet tall. Anyway the storms caused the largest of the two branches to split at the base, but not fall. About how much do you think it will cost to have it taken out? You think its something myself and some buds could do with a couple chainsaws?

I love trees, that's a really nice one. I'd still be climbing it at my age. :)

I used servicemagic.com to find a tree removal service when a storm took mine a few years back.

I really like this tree, it is one of the main reasons I picked this house. But with that large split on the center it won't live or last much longer before its on my house.

I don't know if this would work in Texas, but we had a monster (100 feet or so) tree go down on our driveway late last year. It took out our power. While the road was blocked so the fire department could wait till PG&E could say it's not a danger, 4 different people came up and asked if they could have it for firewood.

One knew a tree guy and brought him and his crew to hack it up. Another was a landscaper. So maybe a post on craigslist or a couple calls might get you free removal. If you paid someone it would probably be a lot.

If you and your buddies practice smart judgement and build some scaffolding it could be done. I myself would give it a good shot or see if I could get a gone for free before I paid.
