Im not rooted. Is there a way to hide the status bar, yet show it when I want with a swipe down from the top or some thing?

Without being rooted, I don't think you can with TouchWiz. If you use another launcher like Nova, you can.

This. You have to install a 3rd party launcher. That doesn't require root and is a great way to customize without rooting.

I prefer NOVA launcher. Others have talked about HOLO HD, Apex Launcher, Go Launcher Ex, and a couple others. I used to use Go Launcher Ex, but found it to be a battery hog in comparison to Nova (which is definitely lighter).

Ok, I'm a little confused now. I got a note 8, so I put nova launcher on and I'm going through and configuring. For the Note 8, there is a toggle to have transparent notification bar, but the toggle doesn't exist for the Note 2. Anybody know if that's a difference between tablet version versus phone version?

Question....why are you doing all that when you're going to return that note anyway?

There's an app called Omega StatusBar that might do the trick for you. I used it to get transparency without being rooted but I didn't like the way it changed my notification fonts so I don't use it anymore. I probably could get it to look the way I want but transparency and auto-hide of the status bar just aren't big enough issues to me for me to bother.
