Apostrophe doesn't work when texting

I just got my android today and the apostrophe doesn't work when I text. I put it in the symbol mode, but I consistenly get a . not '! Any ideas??

What phone are you using sbnorthro? Since different phones use different keyboards.

On my keyboard I still have to hit shift for the apostrophe.
