App blockers

Do app blockers that use some sort of pattern, password, or pin actually work as a security measure? They seem great for parental control for making sure kids stay away from certain apps on any given device.

I'm just wondering if they would offer an extra layer of security for a device beyond the lock screen. It seems to me that if some idiot stole my phone and got past the lock screen that I would need to have blocked all apps and settings or they would have full access to everything anyhow.

That's where those remote phone wipe apps come in right?

And either use PIN or password lock for maximum security. I'm paranoid, so I also encrypt my devices.

Are you talking about the screen lock? I don't like the pattern because it's easy to figure out with smearing. I use a PIN also.

For a dummy like me, what does encrypting a device do?
