I'm looking to develop an app, and would like some information on how copyright works in this industry. From my research so far, there is not an existing app with all the features that I intend to apply, though there are apps with some of the features. How do I know when I'm breaching copyright, and what would prevent a future developer from creating an app very similar to mine?

I'm not a lawyer or a copyright expert, but if you look in the Play Store for any particular app you'll find many others with the same features.
Copyright would apply more to branding (try calling your app Angry Birds or Kindle and you'll see what I mean) or distribution (it is a copyright violation to download someone's app and then distribute it via your own website). At least to my naive, uninformed observations of this area.

I wouldn't worry about copyright of apps/features unless you are actually copying assets from another app. Or making yours look so similar that it is hard to tell from the real thing.
I am not a lawyer though. Caveat Emptor.
The real concern in software development is patents. But that is unlikely to be a problem for an indie dev unless you start making serious money.
