Been searching like crazy, i knew i saw it somewhere but i cant seem to find it. i download handsent sms and i didnt set the "default" sms app. the notification no longer appears and inside the "application" setting screen i cant clear the default. i want to set the stock messaging icon to use handsent.

Your best bet would be to uninstall/reinstall handcent. That should re-open the option to change where the default messaging icon goes.

Also, did you check the Clear Defaults button under the default Messaging app? When you're in the application list, hit Menu > Filter > All so you can see it.
