App Development Opinions Needed

I have a need to have an App developed for my use.

It's function is pretty simple, it needs to compare a list of numbers to find out which numbers appear the most, which numbers appear the least and which numbers don't appear at all. I also need to be able to choose the sample size of numbers that have already been entered.

I've looked at most if not all spreadsheet Apps, but from reading reviews and descriptions I'm not sure if they will be able to produce the results I want (uneditable, or no forms support).

What I need to know is what direction I should go with getting this App created. I've read that Java applets can be converted into an Android App. An Excel workbook will not play nice with Android. Adobe Air Apps are to expensive to have developed, as well Android Apps are expensive to have written.

I have zero experience with all of the above options, so I'm looking for any and all opinions in helping me choose the most cost effective direction to proceed.

Spreadsheet? If so, which App would work for my requirements?
Database App?
Java?
APK?

Any thoughts or help will be greatly appreciated.

Is there anybody here that has the knowledge to create this? I'm willing to pay if the price is right.

TIA,
Mark

Welcome to the forums!

We've gotten requests similar to yours before, and we have various venues here for just this sort of thing - but - I'm not sure where to refer you, so with your permission, I'd like to get some more info.

Are you looking for a mobile app, web app, desktop app or don't care?

Yes, there are converters for Java to Android. And commercial services that will turn a web into an app. Adobe Air is a little heavyweight for many mobile devices, but runs fine on more capable ones. But I think those questions come last.

I've got some experience in software development, so although I'm not available to do this directly for you, maybe I can help a little -

While that's clear to you, please be prepared to answer any number of questions on that, and freely clarify your requirements without being asked. Example, you want a report including which numbers don't appear at all: many programmers will walk away simply because there are an infinite number of numbers. So, if you have a range or bounds, that's helpful. And what sort of numbers? Simple integers? Dates coded as numbers? Signal strength values (floating point numbers, not integers)? Is there a fixed possible range? Most importantly - where is this list of numbers coming from? Not the source of the numbers, the source of the list - do you have specific files already? Does it come from user entry? Final output to file (if so, are there file requirements) or to the screen?

So, further requirements definition will help you gain traction, and a clearer picture of whether you want this as mobile, web or desktop will help you get the right audience of developers.

EarlyMon, thank you for the fast reply.

If you don't mind I'd like to answer inline with your quoted post.

Mobile App. It needs to run independently without any network connection.

Yes, there are converters for Java to Android. And commercial services that will turn a web into an app. Adobe Air is a little heavyweight for many mobile devices, but runs fine on more capable ones. But I think those questions come last.

So, if you have a range or bounds, that's helpful.

The range is from 1 to 80. The App that I want developed is a Keno, think lottery, analyzer. With each game a total of 20 numbers will be added to the list of numbers. I need to be able to choose and sample a user defined set of these entered numbers.

And what sort of numbers?

Simple integers.

Simple integers? Dates coded as numbers? Signal strength values (floating point numbers, not integers)? Is there a fixed possible range?

1 through 80 for the range.

Most importantly - where is this list of numbers coming from? Not the source of the numbers, the source of the list - do you have specific files already? Does it come from user entry?

Yes, user entries.

Final output to file (if so, are there file requirements) or to the screen?

To the screen.

So, further requirements definition will help you gain traction, and a clearer picture of whether you want this as mobile, web or desktop will help you get the right audience of developers.

I'll also add that I don't care about how ugly or simplistic the App is. I just need something that will crunch these numbers. I also need to be able to clear all of the entered numbers from time to time without losing any of the formulas.

Thanks once again EarlyMon!

Excellent clarifications, thanks!

That won't be terribly difficult for any decent dev. A few hoops to jump through for the right on-screen layout.

I'm moving this over to the right apps request area. If you don't get a decent answer in a day or two, click on my name, choose to send me a private message from the drop-down and let me know. :) ;)

PS - If you can see this PS, you've just refreshed your browser, note the new location for your thread.

Hi there, I think I have enough skill to build something like that. But, what is the use of apps like that? If you are after keno games, there are already quite a few similiar games on the market.

The purpose for me is to analyze the drawn numbers. There are three existing Keno analysis tools in the market, non of which do what I need the App to do. I'm not looking to play Keno, I'm looking to win Keno at casinos.

I welcome any PM's from members that feel they have the ability to program what I'm asking for.

P.S. It needs to work with Android. Dragging a computer along to a casino is out of the question ;-)

Will you be happy to have a screen full of buttons (80 buttons, representing 1-80), plus the "next game" and "stats" button?

during a game in the casino, you use the 1-80 buttons to select numbers already showed up. Once a game is completed, you use "next game" to submit the game result, and start the next game.

you can, at any time, use the stats button to get a report of

1) which number showed up the most
2) which number showed up the least
2) which number didn't show up at all

If you are happy with this design (and no one take on the development yet), I will make the app during the weekend and submit it to the market, then you can download it for free.

cheers,
Ken

Ken',

This app job has been completed by another Android Forums member (and very well I might add).

I do appreciate your response and encourage you to continue this project for your own gain.
