app for watching DVD file on Galaxy

Wongmo

Lurker
I download DVDs onto my computer desktop as files. How to move such a file to my Galaxy and what app to watch it with?

1) A "DVD file" is an iso. It can't be watched by any app, it's an envelope for files.

Whether you can watch a movie you take from a DVD depends on what type of file it is. And that depends on a few things, If you made the DVD (with a camera that burns mini-DVDs) you can probably just convert the file to an avi. If you're talking about a commercial movie, that's illegal and can't be discussed here. If it's a movie file that you burned to a DVD, just copy it from the DVD like any other file.

2) Move it the same way you'd move any file. For a file that size, putting your SD card into your computer and copying the file to the SD card would probably be most efficient and safest. (Use a card reader if your computer doesn't take SD cards directly.) Use the adapter to turn the microSD card into a full-size SD card.

What adapter? What is a full size SD card?

thank you so much!

DVD files use the vob & ifo file extenstions, does wondershare play them?

I don't know why iso has been mentioned.

Wongmo, it would be handy if you could clarify what the file formats are? To my knowledge there's nothing on Android that would play those formats without converting them first.

Even if WonderShare (or other apps) can play a DVD image (.iso) file, the FAT32 file system (used by most phones for SD-card storage) has a maximum file size limit of 4GB. Since most DVDs are bigger than 4GB, you can't even transfer most .iso image files to your SD card. I tried.

If your phone supports the exFAT file system for SD-cards (which apparently is rare), then it may be possible to load files that are bigger than 4GB. See this thread. MicroSD and 4GB limit - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

I have a lot of DVD .iso files on my home media server so it would be convenient to simply load a few DVD .iso files onto my SD card for viewing while on trips. But I guess I'll have to continue to use the open-source Handbrake program to convert my DVDs to smaller MP4 files that I can play on my phone.

I'm pretty sure I remember using exfat on my Galaxy S3. If that is not an option, maybe a usb flash stick formatted in exFAT or NTFS can be read using an OTG cable?

Why not just convert the files. There is software for windows pc's that I use sometimes called MakeMKV. It converts the video to mkv format. MKV video is usually a smaller file, such as: instead of having a 1GB video file, MKV makes it 400MB.

It doesn't retain the DVD menus.

I have some other software on my pc that I have paid for and it does retain the DVD menu. It is called AnyDVD by Slysoft Inc. I have copied plenty of movies through the years and all of them have retained the dvd menu. I can rip normal dvd's and blu-ray as I have a blu-ray burner. Im a computer networking guru and know a lot about this field as well. I also use ps3Video9 to convert whole dvd's to mp4, mkv, etc. They have all retained the main menus. I dont think there is any app that can read an .iso file on android.

Here is a link that explains a lot for you. .Iso files are dvd images and need to be converted or mounted first before you can access the media files inside the .iso. just trying to help you out, hopen I could help in one way or another.

I tried the WonderShare app and it worked.
Thanks for letting us know. Was your ISO image greater than (the FAT32 limit of) 4GB? If so, which file system does your SD card use?

By the way, one of the (slightly less-convenient) solutions on the aforementioned XDA thread is to open the ISO file with ES File Explorer and then when prompted for which player app to use, to select MX Player.

No, the ISO I used was less than 4GB. I have used files (mkv) larger than 4GB but my sdcard was formatted to exFAT at the time. My current card is FAT32 because I read somewhere that FAT32 was less likely to get fried in my Galaxy S3 - I've had two cards die in my phone so I'm being cautious with my third one...

I agree that 4GB is a seriously inconvenient limitation.

I tried playing the ISO using MX Player like that but it only played the video and didn't display the menus.

Good stuff man, want just trying to help you out and rack my brain about HOW we could get it to work on android. Good to know there is a solution to this lol! Happy modding!

Thanks man, but it wasn't actually me that was looking for a solution. Like yourself I was looking for a solution for the OP as I thought it would be good if it were possible.

Although the OP doesn't seem to have returned since they asked their question... if we have learned something in the process then it's all good. :)
