[APP] Is Google Voice worth it?

Rwestiv

Newbie
I had a Samsung Infuse on AT&T and I put Google Voice on it.

It was a disaster. Some calls went right to GV without the phone ringing (a problem I never had prior to GV) and it never really seemed to work as well as the AT&T Visual Voicemail.

Now that I'm with Sprint, I was thinking about going GV another try.

I have two phones, and I would like to be able to use GV on both so that all calls to my main number come to whatever phone I am using that day, I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for any info!

I use google voice and haven't really had any problems with it. I will admit that I rarely ever use the phone for phone calls (they should start calling them personal assistants that can make phone calls, not phones that can do everything else!) but I don't think I get too many rings before it makes it to voicemail. I would have to do further testing and compare it to family members phones to get a more accurate result.

GV can do that and much, much more. I've used GV for years and for hundreds - thousands - of calls with no problems.

I use Google Voice for all my calls, text and voicemails. I've never had a problem with missed calls unless I'm in an area where I wouldn't be able to receive calls anyway. I've also been using apps like Groove IP and Talkatone for VOIP calls using Google Voice and it works out really well.

Which one do you like the best or are you using both at different times? I'm not seeing Talkatone in the Google Play market.

Any tips on using Talkatone?

Thnx.

Right now I am using Talkatone over 3g/4g and it does a great job. Everyone says there is a delay when I am on Wifi so I avoid using it and go with Groove IP. With talkatone I don't know if I just haven't learned the secret or if it isn't there, but I have no idea how to answer incoming calls. I have been telling most people I will call them right back.

Groove IP has a better set up and the options in the paid version to have it auto run during certain times of the day or only call on wifi are great. It just doesn't perform as well over 3g/4g (for me anyway) as Talkatone does.

It is really a toss up with each and I switch back and forth between each one. The nice thing is that Talkatone is updating a lot lately and each version is getting better. In my mind I want Groove IP to work better since I paid for it, but I really just want the one that will work the best overall. There is a lite version of Groove IP for wifi only that can be tested, but it doesn't have all the options.

Just wanted to add I use a very similar combination to you. With Sprints Google Voice integration I use the Google voice app for my texting and voicemail exclusively as well. I also use GrooveIP at home while I'm on wifi, but regular cell when I'm out and about.

You should give Talkatone a try when you are in a decent 3g/4g area. I've been really pleased so far with it. If they could improve Wifi calling I'd probably use them 100%.

I also use Google Voice a lot, ever since the days when it was GrandCentral. I've had the same phone number since I signed up and it's what I use for just about everything voice/voicemail related. The beauty is the call/spam blocking. I've had a few instances where customers bug me endlessly, so I setup their number in GVoice to play a "not in service" message. Works flawlessly and I don't have to give out my real number.

The other nice thing about it is that I can swap phones/carriers on the fly and not worry about having to update numbers.

I have never had any problems with missing calls or texts.

I rarely use Google Voice (because I have ample cellular minutes and because at home I killed our land line and got NetTalk Duo which gives us unlimited calls to the US & Canada for $30/year-- no PC needed) but I've been using Google voice with the free open-source SIP client, called SIPdroid. It was kinda complicated to set the whole thing up, but it's been working fine for over a year. It's nice to know that if you're somewhere with WiFi but without cellular coverage, that you can make free calls to the US. GrooveIP is reportedly much easier to set up and therefore perhaps worth the cost.

I personally use it mostly for the transcription. It does get things hilariously wrong sometimes, but usually you get an idea of the general subject someone is calling about.

anyone have advice about using gv with multiple devices? i use it with sprints intergration, using my sprint number as my gv number. on my sprint phone texts are set to use the stock messaging app, but on my razr i use the gv app. seems as though sometimes the text will go to my evo 3d but not to the razr... any suggestions?

Good advice, I will give this a shot as I too have been having issues with Network calls using Groove IP
