Help APP Issues /GMail

New user here and I am glad to see an active community so thanks for being here.

I received my pre-ordered RAZR yesterday and so far, I like what I see.

I have an issue with a couple of apps that (for lack of a better term) redirect me to "Add a Google Account" screen when I select the app. The ones that I have found so far that do this are BOOKS, MARKET and NETFLIX. I don't have (nor want) a Gmail account and for the life of me, don't understand why one would be required for using any of these apps. In some cases, once the app is selected and is directed to the "Add a Google Account" screen, even using the back function won't take me "back". It just reloads to the same screen. I can use "home" to get back however.

Has anybody else seen the same issue? And if not, do these apps work for anybody that does not have a Gmail account?

I'm guessing you are a new android user as well. A Gmail account is pretty much required to use an android phone for anything other than a standard telephone.

Without a Google account an Android phone is like a BlackBerry without BIS or BES. Basically pointless.

Thanks for helping a newbie out. Yes I am a first time android user (I guess it shows). To be absolutely honest (and please don't laugh), this is my first smart phone. I have been waiting for the products to mature a bit before I jumped in. This is replacing my RAZR V3xx. Always been a Moto fan and so far, this one does not disappoint.

Well I guess I will be forced to set up a gmail account. I am an admin on two forums and the vast quantity of spammers that use gmail accounts and attempt to register for our forums has left a sour taste in my mouth for the gmail product. Does not make sense to me to force one to have a gmail account for something like Netflix for which I already have an account. But....It is what it is I guess, but I still don't have to like it.

Good to hear you're enjoying the phone.

Regarding gmail; this is a google phone, so no one should be surprised Google account is required to make full use of it.
