Is there some way to password protect playstore on Samsung Android?
My wife let's her young niece play with her phone, but then her niece installs games that she thinks are 'free' but aren't, or have malicious bugs.

PRetty much all of them are bug free , basically it is much easier on playstore since it is a build in system app and it will ensure whenever you do get a bug on it, the store will report it, there are a handful of idiot people who post up such zany products on playstore sometimes, but if you would like to disable it by going to apps > Middle icon to disable it > There you go,but you cannot have it blocked since it is required that it will run up and upgrade your system as well as your apps.


Also I am pretty sure there is a kids section on google playstore too.
 
AI suggested using App Lock found under settings > Security and privacy. However, I do not find the setting on my Samsung S21 Ultra. An alternative was to search for an app locker from the play store. The suggested app was AppLock. Both methods require a pin, password or fingerprint to access the apps that you choose to lock.

i dont use google, but there used to be a setting that made it so that approval had to be given before apps could be downloaded or purchases made

not sure if it is there anymore

you could disable the download manager app, but that would disable all downloads to the device until it is enabled again
