App Permissions

I am looking for a 'walking tracker' app. I have looked at some recommended on this forum such as RunKeeper, Endomondo Sports Tracker and 'Cardio Trainer'. What concerns me is the permissions which they request such as 'Personal Information'; why do they need to access my contacts? Also 'Full internet access' why do they need this?

Are these apps safe?

The full internet access I could see as most allow for databasing of your info for you to track and chart online.

The contacts thing is starting to be more bothersome to me. I can see where they might want to know how many of your friends run too, (or whatever activity) but I don't see why they need access to your contacts listing.

Thanks for your response. I agree with your comments about access to contacts.

Perhaps the apps I am looking at are too sophisticated for my purposes. All I want to do is measure how far I walk or cycle and the time / speed. I would also like to see a trace on a map of the journey. Are there any simple apps which would give me this information without all the complexity of the ones I have so far identified?
