To remove carrier placed apps you typically need to root your phone and then freeze/delete/rename the app. Frequently people will freeze the app using the paid version of Titanium backup to allow themselves to restore the app if needed. The primary reason for doing this is because many new phone updates will check the state of the phone before installing. The update might abort if it finds that these apps are no longer on the phone.
