App that allows free texting...

I plan to cancel my $30 texting plan and use an app that allows free texting. Most of the apps I tried, requires me to make the person I am texting to download the app as well. Is there any free texting app out there that does not have that requirement?
I know there is google voice, but it crashes a lot and messages get erased when I log out.
HeyWire works, however it tags on an annoying "sent by heywire" after every message.

Try "textfree". I used it on my iPod touch and its also for android. They receive it like they would any other text sms. So they don't need the app themselves. Although it will try to add "sent from textfree" siggy but you can toggle that off. Obviously on my touch I had to be on Wi-Fi, and if you don't have a network connection you might too. I'm not sure how it works anymore since I had it just to play with it. Also it might be different for android, but hey check it out it might be exactly what you're looking for.

Try "textfree".

It does work, however it does not let me save the numbers as contacts. So if i use it in the long run, i have to memorized everyones number because it wont let me put names on.

Google voice...
I already stated it crashes me, and i am not able to use it.

you can go to the google play and find, i think that is the best option to search your free texting apps

Yes i have tried a lot out there. I downloaded them, only to find out most of them require the opposite party to also download their app. The only one that does not require this that i have found so far is, textfree ( problem stated above), heywire ( tags on a "sent by heywire" after every message).

if you have free web texts with your call plan you should find an app that lets you send from them;
eg; I have 300 free web texts a month and use an app called Irish Cabbage

if you can send emails through Gmail, you can send txts to people by putting their #'s and @ their servers and it will send them txts. for instance:
<phone number>@mms.att.net will send someone who uses at&t a txt from your email to their phone #.
probably not exactly what you are looking for, but it works.
I use google voice myself, and it pushes to me tablet fine. I have also used something I think was called text4free, or it might of been called call4free but honestly just the google voice App worked better for me. Also, I might add if you do not get free text and calling, those apps route through google voice and since google voice allows you to forward to phone/etc, it gives you a call and txt unlimited capability.

Ok, I'll try to explain what I did and I hope you find this useful.

First of all you have many options. Pinger/Textfree .. TextPlus... GoogleVoice are the three that I tried. also there is Talkatone but I didn't try that.

I don't know what you mean about not being able to save contact numbers.. just add them to your phone regular phone book and the apps will show the names from the phone book.

Now to what I did.
1: Get a Google Voice number.

2: Get TextPlus account and make a number ((I say TextPlus app because you need to verify the google voice call and TextPlus is the only one I know that have VoIP on android..))

3: Make google voice forward calls and SMS to your TextPlus number. (Before you can do that you need to verify your TextPlus..)

4: Give people your google voice number *NOT TextPlus*

5: When someone texts your Google Voice number you will get it forwarded to TextPlus but google will give your friend a new number from its server, but when google forward the sms it'll include your friend number in the message it self.
Just text your friend back at that new number from GV and they'll receive it fine.

6: Add your friends numbers in google contacts and in your phone book. and for every new text you get just add the new google number to that person.

Why did I go through all this and not just use TextPlus straight?
Few reasons.
First, Textplus give you the number for 30 days if you didn't use it you lose it.. Google you won't lose it that fast..

Second: TextPlus or all the other apps none of them seem to save your texting history.. if you do it through GV you got your history online.

Third: You can go online to GV site and text from the browser so you won't be stuck with the phone only.

I hope this was clear and you find it helpful.
