Help App trying to install, possible virus?

Boudicca

Newbie
Hi,
The past few days I have had alerts on my Android telling me that "Clean Master" wants to install. It has a windmill logo next to it. When I click on it it goes to a website namely something like www.newapst.ku888.in/apstne and I get an alert saying that opening this type of file can harm my phone at which point I close the tab. Is this a virus? I have AVG free which checks my phone and Malwarebytes and I don't go round downloading random dodgy apps so I'm not sure how this has got on my phone?!
I'm not sure what to do...I'm not happy about the fact that I have my email counts and Facebook linked with this phone now! My phone is on Android Kit Kat.
Can anyone help please?

It's not a virus as such, but more likely your browser has been contaminated with some adware that's trying to aggressively push "Clean Master" (the sort of thing that's discussed here). Try clearing all browser caches, and if it persists clear all data on all browsers.

And do not install Clean Master. Even assuming it's a "legitimate" copy that's being pushed, that app is an invasive, privacy violating piece of crapware that will degrade your performance and allow Cheetah Mobile (the developers) to start spamming you.

What is truly astounding is that Samsung have integrated a version of this into the S6's system software! Whether that version also passes personal information to Cheetah Mobile I don't know, but even if not it seems an incomprehensible decision on Samsung's part (unless maybe Samsung work on the same principles as FIFA).

Thank you Hadron...I know how to clear the caches but how do I clear all data on all browsers? Or would a factory reset be easier?!

Hi,
I've done a factory reset just to be sure, a bit cautious perhaps but I'm not a 100% sure how things work on Android! Will I be ok to set up my gmail account again now? The reason I ask is because I occasionally get confidential information via that address because of work and I'd hate for anyone to access my Gmail account via malware through my phone. If anyone can advise on this I would be most grateful as that is the most important concern I have. Many thanks.

I don't think your phone was infected with anything very serious, so I think it will be fine. If it was not rooted then the factory reset will have removed anything that was on it, so you are clean now.
