[app use/question] Android anti-virus apps

Whats the consensus? Is there any need for them? Ive never heard of an android system messing up from anything other than user error.
The way I see it, it's like insurance....you may never need it, but it can't hurt to have it, just in case you do.
The more popular Android becomes, I figure it is only a matter of time until some insidious app steals our information, or infects us with something.
If you decide on an Antivirus, try Lookout, or Avast. They are two of the best.

I'd like to add that Lookout, since I use this, has other features too like: safe browser, backup and restore, locate and find phone, remote wipe and will let you know what apps ask for personal/location info. I've never had a virus or any malware on any of my last two andorid phones. But, I am careful as to what I download though.

Since reading this: http://androidforums.com/android-ap...explained-security-tips-avoiding-malware.html

I've never had to worry about installing an anti virus.

I use lookout here too BUT (& I should have realized this myself but doh!) after reading the above link its kind of surplus to requirements (at least for me).

I'll explain my thinking (feel free to disagree)

LOOKOUT FEATURES VS NATIVE to ANDROID.

Backup & restore VS Built in backup & restore.
Checks permissions VS Apps tell you there permissions when you download & install.
Missing device VS OKAY no native for this but am pretty certain its easy enough to install something on PC for tracking the GPS of the tablet.

This is based on the free lookout & my personal experience with the Acer iconia a500. I do realise different handsets/makes/models/tablets are likely to have different capabilities, so this is just a personal observation.

Just saying lol

Doesn't mean I'm uninstalling lookout I personally believe every bit of security you can have is a wise thing to do.

Unless the AV is draining battery or causing performance issues, it doesn't hurt to have one installed. It's just another safety net. You can have an AV installed and still check permissions and following all the security tips. There's nothing to lose with having both.
