App ?

Don't think an app on it's own could do that, tell if a recipient has opened and read the email. It would be something that the email service itself handles. I've seen it happen with some email services, that the sender requests receipt that the email has been read, but can always decline the request and the sender gets no acknowledgment that the email was read. MS Exchange based email can do it AFAIK, but it's not universal across all email services.

There are ways to do it across all email services, like including links to zero pixel invisible GIFs on a website in the email. That's something spammers often do. If the image was viewed, then the email was opened, which is what a spammer wants to know. That the email address is valid and does get read. And so most email apps block embedded images by default.

Is there a app that tells you if a sent email has been read by the recipient?

mikedt summarised it quite well but just to add that I use Outlook (2010) on my PC and one of the options is 'For any message that includes a read receipt request' - do one of the following: 1) Always send a read receipt 2) Never send a read receipt 3) Ask each time .... Mine is set to 'Never send a RR'.

Other email systems I've used in the past are similar so, to answer your original question, it depends ...... :D

Yes, I don't use Outlook or Exchange, but have the same setting on Thunderbird and globally set it not to respond to read receipt requests on any of my email accounts.

I find "recall" messages some people send quite funny. As I'm not on their Exchange system, all these do is tell me that they wish they hadn't pressed Send (which usually gets my attention in a way the original mail wouldn't have).

I saw something on the Internet about Gmail having that feature but I think it only works when viewing emails in the browser. Just thought I'd ask of there was a app for that! Thanks
