AppBrain and GMail dependencies

I need to free up some internal storage on my HTC Desire - it's run out of room even to upgrade the OS! A couple of candidates for deletion are the Android Market (I use AppBrain) and GMail, but before I go ahead I need to ask: does AppBrain depend on Market being installed? And, if I delete GMail, do I lose the sync between my phone and the GMail Contacts and Calendar?
I'd be grateful for any guidance.

Do not delete system apps. Use Titanium BAckup and backup your apps and uninstall the ones you do not. You can restore them through Titanium Backup at any time.

Besides, does Desire not have Android version 2.2? It should and thus you should be able to move apps to the SD card (also good to have Titanium Backup because it can move any apps to SD whether the app itself supports it or not).

Do not move any apps that have widgets to SD as widgets will stop working.

I have moved everything possible to SD card using App2SD. Are Market and GMail both system apps then?
Yes, both Market and gmail are system apps that come preinstall on your phone. They have their own partition of the phone's memory and is not saved on the portion of the memory dedicated for 3rd party apps. If you're rooted, which you don't seem to be, you can increase that portion on the phone.

You need market for Appbrain to access the market. Appbrain is just a directory of the market apps, if you want to install the app, it takes you to the Market. You cannot install apps from Appbrain. You fight want to read the Appbrain FAQ

The Market takes up huge amounts of memory in cache form.
Clear the cache?
That could be the search entries saved in there...though I don't think it'd take up a huge amount. You can try to clear cache and see if that works.
