The iPhone4 wont be a reference or the best display panel for long, i wager before the end of the year something else significantly better than than and probably another revision of samsung's Super AMOLED will be out.
) wait... sorry... ur saying apple's retina display is better right?? i don't wanna get this wrong....Steve Jobs even said that the iPhone 4 IPS screen will be the reference for years to come and he didn't think anyone would come even close. I have to say that it's downright laughable that no one would come close in years, seeing how nothing right now indicates that they are actually ahead, let alone far ahead.
I do agree that they made a nice choice with their build quality though, even though there's some reservation for that the by far most common thing to break on the 3GS was the glass, which is now all over the phone. Plastic won't feel as nice, even though I will enjoy the SGS being lighter.
I think this pretty much sums up all of the specs of iphone 4. Nothing shown makes me think the new iphone is revolutionary or 'new'. The retina display just looks like a well done IPS LCD with high resolution. Super AMOLED is still better, until I see 'real' pictures that prove otherwise. That's really the only thing new that they put out. The rest of the hardware specs are just catching up with the latest Android phones. So in my opinion, the tables have turned, Apple is now trying to catch up with Android (Once Froyo lands, you might be able to say the same thing about software as well).

This is just more proof that Samsung's major goal is surpassing Apple to get that number 2 spot behind Nokia worldwide. Apple comes out with this new type of display.... Samsung outdoes that by coming out with Super AMOLED.
You can't really blame Steve Jobs for trying to fight the battle though. It's his company and to be honest, as a consumer, people should expect nothing less. Do we really expect him to come out and say, "Well crap, looks like Samsung beat us this time."
The only people that might believe the new iPhone's screen is the best are the blind fanboys that only buy Apple because it's a fad. Smart consumers will do some research.

That's pretty much the reason he says what he says. Jobs is well aware that the majority of iphone users are the average consumer who see the iphone and label it the jesus phone. They just assume its the best thing ever because its the 'iphone'.
A good example is a friend of mine who gets the new one every year. He starts talking about how the iphone 4 is going to do 720p and video calls and that it makes it the best phone ever. I'm like, well the EVO already does that, so does the Galaxy S and there are numerous phones outside the US that have been doing that. He just says, "Oh". Of course, he is still getting the iphone. I don't bother trying to explain how limited their video calls are, as well as their multi tasking. Most Apple fanbois are too blindly loyal.
they are, apple is way down.
Samsung is #2 worldwide for mobile phones. Maybe he meant smart phones specifically?
I'm pretty sure Samsung could up the resolution if they wanted, they just don't want to because it will cut into power consumption. The average consumer won''t notice the difference in resolution between the two displays, at least in terms of sharpness. Just like the average consumer thinks the iphone is outright the better phone/product just because its the iphone.
Also, I read an article that said Samsung declined to make displays for Apple, so they went another route. Pretty sure Samsung can keep up with anything Apple wanted and surpass it, as their Super AMOLED surpasses ISP LCDs, and will continue to do so as they pour more R&D into it.
On a final note, Apple's products are solid and the new iphone will probably be solid too. I'm not hating on Apple, i'm just not going to blindly follow what they say and claim the iphone is the best thing out there and other products are years away from being on par. The new iphone and the higher end Android phones are on par right NOW, and at the rate that they progress and get released, Android phones will surpass the new iphone. All Apple did was put itself on even playing field with its hardware revisions.
Do you have a some more info on the outdoor visibility claim? IPS vs Super AMOLEDIf the Galaxy S could have an IPS display with such a high resolution density, I wish it could get it over SuperAmoled. The only thing great aout super amo is the black levels and the power consumption. IPS displays win on outdoor visibility.
Samsung might be having trouble meeting screen production commitments for other customers because they are focusing on producing displays for their own products. i.e. Wave and a 110 country release of the Galaxy S.If Samsung could make a Super AMOLED at the capacity that Apple needs and at the resolution Apple needs, I'm sure they would have used it. Simple fact is, its hard to scale up Super AMOLED production at the resolution density that Apple wants.
I meant, do you have a link to a comparison video or review? In other words, what are you basing this claim on? (not saying you are wrong or right, just asking...)Yes, Super AMOLED screens are 20% better than AMOLED for outdoor use which is still far worse than a good IPS display in outdoor use.
