Application Data to SD

Is it possible to have the application data be saves and accesses from sd card instead of the phone's internal memory?

I define application data consisting of 2 parts: application data settings (on internal storage) and application data support files (on external storage).
AFAIK, The internal part can be moved only by rooting and applying tricks like Data2SD.

Honestly, I am not aware of the drawbacks. The application data I'm referring to are the settings or save games of an applications. Incase, I was able to move them to sd card, does it mean that the application will still be looking up on the internal storage and not use the application data transferred on sd card?
