Application is unable to find files on SD card

Dear Android Gurus,

I am faced with a peculiar problem and have not found a solution on any forum. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 4g LTE

=> Everything was ok till one fine day none of my multimedia applications like Gallery, Video or Music seem to be able to find their files which are located on the SD card.
=> These apps are able to find all files automatically in the device memory, but do not show the files from the SD card
=> I can still view or play the files if I access them from File Explorer or connect the phone to my laptop
=> However even if I play the file, it does not even show up in the "Recently played" menu of the app.
=> How do I resolve this, is there a setting which I need to set like maybe setting the type of files viewable for the app etc, so that I can automatically view all files playable on the app directly from the app as before?

Please help

The files playable from the app are determined by the developer at the time he writes the app, so you can't set that. (For example, you can't make Microsoft Word edit an mp3 file.)

Aside from that I can't give you much help, other than to make a wild guess that it might be a permissions problem if you just updated to Kit Kat (if there's a KK OTA for the S3). If you're running a custom ROM, check with the ROM dev.
