application menu help

so i bought a samsung captivate root with miui to 2.3.7
i turned it on but there isnt the "applications" logo (like 4 small squares) on the homescreen.
can i get it back?
it says in the user manual that there are 4 unremovable icon/shortcuts and that icon is one of them.
the 4 i currently have displaying are: phone, contacts, internet and sms (cant take a screen shot if it will help?)
there arent any applications on the phone is that maybe why the logo isnt showing? i dl'd a new application (youtube and i just have to scroll back and forth on the home screen to view my apps).
i'd rather have the app icon to use to take me to my apps.
can anyone help?

if i cant get this fixed i will be returning the phone for a refund. ashame coz i really like the phone yet an application launcher icon is pretty integral.
also dont suggest the add app -> customizalbe shortcut
it does NOT work on 2.3 you add app and the only options are folders or shortcuts and app launcher isnt under either of these (at least that i can find)
