The app you're thinking of is funambol.

But, like the other reply says, your G1 should have saved all of your contacts in your Gmail account, unless you had disabled auto-syncing.

SADLY for some reason my syncing never worked

If ANYONE can just check their apps market and get me the name that would be AMAZING
it should be under a search for sync or contacts
its got a big blue circle and it looks like it almost has a smiley face int he middle esque...
