Apps Backup

Do I really need to backup my apps? Can't I just reinstall them from the Market? The Market knows which ones I own anyway.

I am using MyBackupPro for data, but do not want to use the space needed for this because it puts me over the 50MB free space.

The backups are stored on your SDCard, not in the phone memory.

if this one app puts you over a certain amount of memory used, I'd evaluate all the other apps you have installed first.

Also, it can be pretty slow installing a lot of apps OTA, whereas a local backup will allow them to be reinstalled a lot faster.

End result - no, you don't have to use it - but it is a lot faster than using OTA, even with WiFi.

I think chaffee may be talking about MBP feature that allows you to store backups on their servers.

I don't include apps in scheduled backups. I include Call Logs & text messages only, and I store backups on SD card, not servers.

I selectively back up apps, currently using Quick System Info PRO, also to SD. Where possible, I back up app configs, also to SD.

I regularly copy SD contents to desktop, ... Service like Dropbox could be good for this too.

I like to backup my apps periodically because sometimes when the apps are updated I don't really like the "improvements" and I find it so simple to undo the update if I have the older version saved. I use Titanium Backup so I don't miss anything but I also occasionally save a copy of all of my apps and data to my desktop just in case I am stupid and break my phone. I am a bit of klutz after all. I use Android Commander which is like using ADB only for dummies.

That makes much more sense now lol. Thanks.

That's actually .. not a bad idea. I may need to start allowing for multiple backups in TiBu - I only use a single backup and have been backing up apps as soon as they get updated, but now that I think about it....3 backups per app, while taking up some space, is not a bad idea at all - then I could revert to an older version anytime I wanted to.

And they say you can't teach old dogs new tricks :p

You can also use Listables just to save a list of apps with links to the market in case anything goes wrong with any of the auto backup methods.

PS: nice to see some old faces around here! I haven't been around in awhile. Both Gadzooks and John Galt helped me test Listables when I first started working on it :D

Yup Yup - And I donated and still have it installed on my ROMs, ALP! Nice to see you're active again!

I didn't know about the market links for apps, that's awesome!

Yeah the original idea was born out of making app lists with BB code to post on forums like this. So in those threads like "what are your favorite apps?" people could just fire up the app and generate BB code with direct market links and QR codes.

Needless to say it expanded in scope after that. You should check out the music and bluetooth sharing in v0.6 :)

Awesome to see you folks too :)

packet! great to see you. jlg, you are always so helpful.

Listables! is cool for Contacts too. It helped me see that a web interface merge operation had some unintended consequences -- Wisconsin area code in Calif friend's entry, or something like that.

Useful tool for lots of things ...

ALostPacket - you'll love the latest way I am working to get stuff done.

Using CM7 nightlies, I've found that restoring apps via TiBu does not restore their market link - and using the market link ain't working.

Your app, though, doesn't look at what I have installed in market - it checks my phone. So I saved the HTML output, and thought about loading that in the phone's browser - not gonna happen for some odd reason.

No sweat. Mounted phone via USB on computer, opened the HTML file in Firefox and am using Fox2Phone to send links to my phone to check directly in market if the app is 'installed' or not.

Also takes a little of the processing off my phone - trying to run browser to open market links means I'd be switching back and forth - using fox2phone I'm only pulling down the notification and opening the link and letting the market open up where the link exists.

So, folks, you never know what cool uses you can come up for an app - and this alone would have caused me to donate to ALP if I hadn't already bought the app. Hell, when I get some money again I may donate again just because.
