Help Apps Don't Always Update

So as little as my title says about my problem, it's finally come to my making a post about this issue as this has happened on more than one of my phones.

Alright I have the MAXX. I had the Bionic. I love both phones, but I keep running into this problem of even though I have all my apps set to auto update, they don't always do it. Now I thought perhaps it was a Bionic problem because it slowly crept up on me with that phone. But nope it's not phone specific at all. Unless it's just with Motorola phones I don't know what to think. Anyways, like I said I have the MAXX and I think it was yesterday I shut my phone for a minute to see if I would get a reply to a text I sent to my bank card asking for a balance. When I turned my phone back on I have 4-5 apps updating. Now I had FULL signal the whole time. I hadn't shut my phone off like that in a couple days at least, so why would updates suddenly come to my phone just because it was powered off and back on?

Same stuff would happen with my Bionic. I would shut it off to free up memory or processing power and when I turned it back on I would have updates coming in. Now I will add that my Bionic was/is rooted but stock. My MAXX however is not. It is stock. So has anyone else encountered this problem and if so what is the best fix for it? If my apps are going to update, why can't they just update like they are suppose to? It is my only complaint with my MAXX.

I only have 140 apps installed and two phones (one root-ed and one un-root-ed).

I like many others never use the option ... ever ... and as a result have no suggestions. I hit one icon to go to play store and then hit options and My apps. I do this generally once a day on each phone when it is in use.

If anything is ready to update I review it and then start the update (usually the option to update all of them).

This puts me in control of when updates occur and what updates occur.

Yep, I'm with Thom, I never ever use that option, so I have no suggestions either.

Over the years Microsoft, and others, have taught me that auto-update is not always a good idea (and is often a BAD idea). So on my phone, tablet and my computers I always set auto-update to 'off' on all apps/programs. I'll take a reminder, but *I* choose when and what updates.

That would be my suggestion.

We started doing this years ago (when Play Store still had a reasonable name). There were bugs then and the process was unreliable. There were bugs that were causing problems. Everyone turned the automatic update off. Most of them left it off.

Just curious ... when it automatic update is on ... do you occasionally get notified that a manual update needs your approval?

Every manual update needs me to OK it actually. I turned on the automatic updates for a convenience factor. Why should I have to always go in and say update the app? I got tired of the notification. So that is what prompted me to turn it on. I understand the bugs and everything with having the updates turned on. I wish the bugs were fixed so that I could enjoy not having to update everything myself. But oh well.

You could just turn notifications off. Do you really care if app XYZ is updated today or Friday?

That way ... when you want to check ... check.

On my "for test only" phone I usually have about 12 apps to update when I check it.

When I go in to update my apps, there is often a list of apps that I can press 'update' and all of them will update. And then there is a different list where each app has to be manually approved one by one. My understanding is that these apps have changed their permissions, and when that happens you have to manually approve the update.
I wonder if that's what you're seeing.

No that's not it. I will be turning off auto update soon. I'm looking for the option to turn it off on all of them at once. Anyways, no that's not what I'm seeing, what is happening is I'll turn my phone off and back on and then have a bunch of apps start updating. Had it happen with my Bionic as well.

Somewhat but probably not total ...

In Play Store go to Settings and make sure Auto-update apps is off. This will set the default to off.

You may have set auto update on individual apps. For that ...
Go to Settings | My apps
Select an app
Make sure Allow automatic updating is off.
Repeat for each app.

You might luck out.
