apps dont use external sd card for backups ?

hi all,

noticed this after having to factory reset post JB update.
apps all seem to save their settings backups to the internal sd card and not (as on htc desire) to the real/externa sd card as you would expect

.....so after reseting, all the backups are lost :/

is there a way of resolving this? i cant see a setting on s3 to generally change this - assume it is down to the app devs needing to code this s3 'feature' ?

thanks

So here is the deal.

HTC desire and most other phones...
/system
/data
/sdcard... yeah?

So apps are coded to use /sdcard as that's your sd card.

S3
/system
/data
/sdcard

/sdcard is internal memory.

Apps use /sdcard as coded. Great for those without an actual sd card as you can use apps that need an sdcard without one.

Add /extSdCard into the mix... apps don't know what this is. It shouldn't exist.

But yeah, to have massive internal memory, they HAVE to call it /sdcard. If it was and extension of /data:

1) apps use /sdcard for extra data so /data not used

2) would be impossible to fill /data

3) would still need an sdcard

So what they did was use clever formatting called fuser. This formats both /data and /sdcard in the same space. Draw back, this means when /data formatted, /sdcard is formatted.

Work around? Not really. Root and wipe from CWM leaves /sdcard in tact

hi SU,

i wouldnt have expected anything less from you ;) thanks

mmmm.....right - so only way round it is for app devs to code in a file explorer syle path picker for saving then i guess

cheers
