Apps not updating properly when screen is off

Hi all. I'm using a ZTE Force, Android version 4.0.4, and for the past month I've been having trouble updating my apps. Whenever the screen goes black, the update or app will either cease downloading, installing, or will be very glitchy. Also, sometimes updates won't even appear on the update list and I have to find them manually. This is extremely frustrating and I've tried updating the play store and my phone but neither has worked. Anyone have any pointers?
 
Go into the WiFi settings and see if there is anything about keeping WiFi on when the device is in standby. The WiFi maybe shutting down when the screen is off.
 
Do you have any battery saving apps? Those work by turning off wifi and data when the screen gets turned off.
