If that's the original Desire then it should be running Gingerbread (2.2) which supports App2SD (though I'm not sure how many apps still support it).
Go to Settings .. Apps .. All and go through your apps checking if the Move to SD button is available.
If your phone is not on Gingerbread, then you can root it (the warranty will be long gone on any original Desire so that's not an issue). The official ROM should be relatively easily available. There may even be better alternative solutions for App2SD that don't rely on app support. Check the Routing section of the HTC Desire sub-forum. Some of the people on there have done amazing things with their phones.
