Is there anyway I can set it so that apps can get sent to the SD card instead of having to manually put apps on SD card?

Its possible yes but you need a rooted device and link2sd at the play store. I'm mobile so sorry can't link it for ya

I, unrooted, use AppMonster Pro Backup Restore to not only send newly installed apps to SD, but also to automatically make backups. I've used to repopulate a new droid several times – definitely worth a few bucks.
