Root Apps2sdON/OFF Questions

After rooting with xtrROM, I have found two zip files on my sd card, xtrROM3.xApps2sdON and xtrROM3.xApps2sdOFF.

I want to store some of my apps to the sd card. Which zip should I flash? (I assume it would be xtrROM3.xApps2sdON, but I'm not entirely sure.) What is the purpose of the other zip file?

Once I flash the zip file, how do I transfer the app(s) over to my sd card? Can I transfer apps that are already on my phone over to the card, or do I have to delete the app and re-install fresh?

I have done a search to no avail, and I appreciate any assistance I can get.

The instructions are in this post on xda-developers: xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM-BETA] [7/30/2010] xtrROM3.1 [apps2sd,jit,lwp,nav,oc]-Vanilla that embraces HTC

Read them carefully. First, back up all of the files on your SD card, because they will be erased. Here are the relevant instructions:

  • BACKUP YOUR SD CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER. Can't stress this enough, as partitioning will wipe the entire card.
  • Reboot into recovery
  • In Android System Recovery, select Partition sdcard
  • In the Partition sdcard menu, select Partition SD
  • Follow the instructions on the phone to partition your SD card. Most folks seem to recommend using the default values however you can go larger or smaller use values 256, 512,768,1024. You will also be asked to set a swap size; I stayed at 32mb but many recommend 0mb.
  • Once the partition is initially created you must then convert to ext3 - In the Partition sdcard menu, select SD:ext2 to ext3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Press the back button on the phone to go back to the main menu.
  • Your SD card is now ready to work with an Apps2sd supported ROM.

Of course, you will now need to copy all of your backed-up files back to the SD card, so, unless you have an external microSD card reader, you'll probably need to restart the phone, connect to your computer, and copy the files back.

After doing all of this, then you can restart to recovery and flash the xtrROM3.xApps2sdON.zip file.

The first start after flashing that file, all of your apps will be moved automatically to the ext3 SD card partition automatically (as well as Dalvik cache), so that first boot takes a bit longer than usual, and you do not need to do anything manually to move the apps.

Does apps running off of the sd card run slower than running off of the phone?

After the initial reboot after flashing the apps2sdon file, can you transfer apps back from the sd card to the phone? and how do you transfer subsequent apps from the market to the sd card?

Thanks in advance for info.

It seems to me that when using app2sd natively as in Froyo you can tell the system which apps to install on the sd card by using the "move to card" function. With 2.1 though it looks like once you turn on this option all current and future apps are installed on the sd card with no way of moving back and forth. I've only been testing app2sd with xtrsense 4 for a couple of days but so far I have not noticed any performance difference. I am also using cache to SD.

Thanks for the quick response and info.

Here is another question, what does cache to sd card actually do? Sorry for the newbie questions.
