Are mobile website apps needed?

There is an app for almost any website. Most of them from what I can see are just redundancy of the associated website. What advantages do these Apps bring? Offline Browsing? I am currently seeing how many of these I can get rid of, and just use a browser. Is anyone else here doing this? If not, why not?

Moved to the Android Applications section, the question seems more relevant here. :)

It depends on the site/app. The app we have for browsing here works a lot better than browsing on a mobile web page (although the recent updated mobile view, it's a lot better).

If a site has a decent, mobile version, there's no real need for an app IMO.

Unless it's for banking or something to that effect, I always prefer a mobile site over an app. I'm always a bit perplexed when I visit a site on my phone and land on a mobile version, and it still prompts me to download an app. I agree that having a mobile site and an app is typically redundant, and I don't see any need to install those apps. Forums can be an exception, though I don't really like the new Tapatalk...
